As many of you have probably guessed, Kosciuszko National Park is my favourite NP.

Sadly, private developers will be allowed in if Barilaro gets his way, taking control of the NP away from NPWS and giving it to his own department. Submissions are open until 23 August for those who are interested. There is more information here:

Kosciuszko NP used to be covered in farmers with sheep and cattle.

It’s hardly a pristine environment.

While it’s true that grazing was once allowed there, many of the endemic plants and animals that survived have since flourished. There are so many pressures that the natural environment within the NP will be contending with in the future, including tourism, feral horses and Snowy Hydro 2.0. Do we need to add even more, just to make a few people richer?

You have to poke the tourists in with a stick like the trains in Tokyo. Otherwiise the developers will lose money. Anyway, National Parks have trees with maybe Koalas in them. Barilaro has a thing against Koalas and trees.

I stayed at Kiandra a few times in the 60s. It would have been awful living there in a tent.

There are plenty of old diggings, including near Thredbo. Some of these areas are preserved as heritage sites.

When I stayed there it was really only the Chalet. It turned into a works dept depot. And then it burned down. I bleiee they did up some shacks before it all burned down last year.

No koalas in KNP, but there was a confirmed sighting along the Snowy Mountains Hwy a few years ago, not too far out of Tumut.

I still remember when tourist buses were allowed right up to Rawson’s Pass. From there, it was a 1km easy walk up to the top of the mountain. That was 1982. There have been many changes since, and almost all have been for the better of the environment, and for the experience too.

+1.

They do actually have professional shooters in helicopters, but they are prohibited from shooting the horses so they target other feral animals only. Horse sightings are counted by the shooters. It’s unforgivable that this is allowed to happen when the only resource to effectively and humanely manage them is already up in the air. Again, this was all Barilaro’s doing, after he accepted a donation from a brumby tours company’s owner. Up to that time, NPWS had drafted an effective horse management plan that would still allow up to 600 feral horses to live in the NP.
