I found this entirely unsurprising when I saw the headline yesterday. I can smell when someone has a cold. (Remember I used to get quite close to people in my work). A dog should be able to easily scent this sort of thing out, given they are waaaay better at it than humans. All you need to do is use dogs that train well.

Mmm. I can usually tell with seconds of when I pick up a cold. It’s a brief stinging sensation in the throat that doesn’t quite go away. Not a “smell”.

I’ve occasionally wondered if it would be possible to make a similar instantaneous hand-held disease detector with an audible alarm for carrying around hospitals and shopping malls. The detector would consist of either a cell culture or a cell-free biological culture in which nerves are replaced by microscale electrical wires.

The same for me.
I can smell a cold the minute I enter the room.

Morning all.
A side effect of my illness is almost total loss of sense of smell.
It makes meals very boring.

It would. Much of what we taste is influenced by smell.
