Fossil fuel companies and advertisers could soon face their Big Tobacco moment

In the letter, Maloney and Khanna wrote, “We are deeply concerned that the fossil fuel industry has reaped massive profits for decades while contributing to climate change that is devastating American communities, costing taxpayers billions of dollars, and ravaging the natural world. We are also concerned that to protect those profits, the industry has reportedly led a coordinated effort to spread disinformation to mislead the public and prevent crucial action to address climate change.”

Exxon helped cause the climate crisis

oil and gas companies have known privately for decades that their products would cause catastrophic temperature rise and extreme weather. Nevertheless, these companies lied about what they knew, telling the outside world that human-made climate change was unproven.

imagine being such a hypercapitalist that the only kind of “support” you can imagine is financial, and therefore you leap into libel

Oil and gas companies are the biggest supporters of renewable energy projects.

Always have been.

Umm, what?

They have always been the biggest deniers of AGW, and have done their best to pretend it isn’t happening.

Their execs have made billions out of selling fossil fuels and are rolling in the money that it brings in. They absolutely do not want anyone to use renewable energy because they would lose their main source of income. If they had any common sense, they would have invested in sources of renewable energy so that they could keep an income in the long term, but no. They just continue to drill new wells, and explore new places in order to exploit new places for the short term income that it brings them.

Oil and Gas companies profit from selling fossil fuels.

Regardless of the existance of AGW, oil and gas companies know where the money is coming from. If people want renewable energy and they can make a profit from that energy (Can anybody say “SA Tesla Battery”?) then they will happily supply it.

Oil and gas companies are now “Energy” companies, and they make a profit from selling energy.

This seems a reasonable thread for moll to post his comments.

Don’t forget: the best way to control the threat to your current profit base from an alternative technology is to own that technology.

As i said before, the best way to prevent an alternative technology upsetting your current profit base is to own that technology.

Then you can control its development, introduction and marketing.

Certainly diversifying into emerging industries makes good business sense but that’s not the case with oil/gas majors in this case. And there’s been 30 years of warning about climate change and the need for renewables and I’d like Moll to provide some evidence of his contention.

Also, if the writing is on the wall for your current business model, then you need to be part of the revolution.

appearing to be benign is the true illusion

I have many long standing issues with “energy” companies
that lobby in favor of war and war profiteers

we all mocked ‘Sodam Insane’
when he claimed Haliburten was “side-ways drilling” thru Kuwait
even tied & gagged him before dragging him out and lynching him
until Haliburten started “side-ways drilling” (FRACKING) for natural gas
resulting in vast amounts of METHANE GAS escaping into the atmosphere

or the leaking off shore oil rigs & pipelines …or tankers going aground
resulting in vast oil spills that not only fouled the shores, but was the covered up
by using millions of tons of “dispersant” which caused it to sink resulting in poisoning
everything from algae to sperm whales devastating the shrimp, lobster & fishing industries

or the off shore dredging to accommodate oil tankers that destroyed the mangrove swamps
that had hitherto protected fragile coastlines (such as New Orleans) from devastating hurricanes

yeah yeah yeah
money profit shareholders
but they have a lot to account for

New technology comes up which could possibly rival your own technologies which are doing quite nicely, thank you.

So, you buy up the new technology, and stash it in the cupboard.

Your current technologies continue to make money for you, but there comes a day when the profits margins begin to diminish, and/or they become less attractive for other reasons.

No problem, you have Plan B in the cupboard. Get it out, put it it to work, and you’re back in the money.
