NSW Premier avoids COVID fine.
Premier Dominic Perrottet has avoided a fine from NSW Police after he was spotted breaching the public health orders at a media press conference yesterday.
Mr Perrottet was seen drinking a beer while standing up at Watson’s Pub in Moore Park right before speaking to the cameras, but NSW Police have confirmed they have applied “discretion”.
“Compliance with COVID-19 restrictions within a venue are the responsibility of the business owner/manager,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
“In this instance, which was an organised media event before the venue opened to patrons, police have applied discretion.”
NSW Police spoke to the owner but decided against issuing an infringement notice for the breach.
Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command said they have since spoken with the licensee and reminded him of his obligations under the Public Health Act.
Mr Perrottet is the second state leader found to breach COVID rules this week after Victorian Premier Dan Andrews was issued a $400 fine for not wearing a mask.

You cannot leave your home other than for one of the six following reasons:
shopping for necessary goods and services (once per day, one person per household)
caregiving or compassionate reasons, including medical care or to get a
COVID-19 test
authorised work (with a permit) or permitted education
exercise (once a day for up to 4 hours, and that 4 hours includes any time spent outdoors socialising in limited groups)
outdoor social interaction in limited groups (once a day for up to 4 hours, and that 4 hours includes any time spent on exercise)
to get a
COVID-19 vaccination (provided the distance travelled, and the time taken is no more than is absolutely necessary)
A stay-at-home curfew is in place for metropolitan Melbourne. Between 9:00pm and 5:00am
You must stay within 15km of your home for shopping and exercise.
If you need to show proof of vaccination you can use the vaccination card.

People in metropolitan Melbourne must stay home between 9pm and 5am. The curfew is not in place for regional Victorian local government areas under lockdown orders.

Amid federal pressure to reopen internal and international borders by Christmas, Dr Moy said what was in the interest of some states was likely to be detrimental to others.
“The issue with New South Wales is that politically but also psychologically but also practically, they’re coming from a half-full-type situation. They’ve got lots of cases, it’s a bonus in terms of relaxation,” he said.
“Here we’ve got a different context. We’re coming from no cases, we’ve actually had freedom.”

He’s very unpopular with the EV crowd, as Victoria has introduced a distance-based tax on EV rego. The more K’s you do the more you pay. You’re required to provide a photo of the odometer in your car when to do the rego thing.
I can understand the dislike of it, but equally I can understand the need for some kind of levy to take up the slack from the reducing petrol/diesel fuel sales & their component of road maintenance revenue.

(I personally think the EV thing is completely bonkers. They should be able to find another way to fund roads – and encourage EV take-up. Initially, a big-fat-tax on hydrocarbon fuels that goes up each year might be a start. Later, General Revenue might be a place to look.)

We need a price on GHG emissions, not a price on not emitting GHG.
That said, there are limits on what can be done about it at state level (but I still think a new tax on using electric vehicles is a terrible idea).

Not quite sure what the are trying to say there, is Covid just like the flu get over it ?
People don’t isolate for the flu (large scale) and die, people did isolate for Covid (half arsed for sure) but significant numbers still died, imagine if we did nothing, probably have deaths in the range of a 100 million

I’m looking the other way. I did the Sweden Stalk report earlier. If you missed it, they are dropping down the deaths per million table. Now down at 52. This means there are 51 countries with a worse deaths per million record. Iran and Ukraine are presently trying to take their place and put them lower.

last time I checked the present range of seasonal influenza didn’t have anything near the same affinity with epithelial cells, couldn’t be said to be a vascular disease, and wasn’t anywhere near as likely to result in sequelae from damage that way
some people are trying to incline others to incorporate their concept of covid into the same category as seasonal flu, common colds, but there is no escaping the fact it is a very serious addition to the range of infections circulating
if you incorporate it into your concept of common colds and flu it’s more like subtraction, in a way, negation maybe, but the reality is it’s something else, something extra, and if anyone wants to test that then try getting covid and flu at the same time, organize beforehand someone else to report back the results, in case it doesn’t go so well. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-13/wilcannia-records-zero-covid-cases-after-major-outbreak/100534558
There are now zero active cases of COVID-19 in Wilcannia after local health authorities declared the last two infected people free of the virus. The Far West Local Health District said all 152 people who contracted COVID-19 – more than 20 per cent of the town’s population – have recovered. It is a stunning turnaround for the remote, predominantly Aboriginal town, which has emerged from Australia’s worst COVID outbreak per capita with only one hospitalisation from the virus.
Wilcannia Baarkindji man Owen Whyman said he was taken aback by how quickly his town was able to get on top of the outbreak. “It was a big surprise to myself and, I suppose, to the community,” he said. “They didn’t realise how quick this would end, but everyone got together and went and got tested. “Thanks to those who got vaccinated … it was good for the community and it’s just good to be out and about.”

There are 12 casual contacts of the man, and another 32 people are in quarantine waiting to learn whether they are a contact at all.

They should continue to manufacture and then donate to poor countries.
For our own good, of course.
We mean mRNA ones probably actually are better, so if Chairman followed through on his plans then maybe Victoria could export those instead, why not give a better product to those in need.
But yes imagine giving to the poor.

….That period was horrifying, but the pandemic flu plan was to “cope” with at least 2,000 deaths a day for 15 weeks. That appears to have been based on the idea that we, the British public, were so profoundly wedded to liberty that we would rather let the equivalent of the entire population of Norwich die in three months than have the nightclubs closed.
More than that, in fact, it was important to keep them open so that people didn’t get depressed: “Large public gatherings or crowded events where people may be in close proximity are an important indicator of ‘normality’ and may help maintain public morale during a pandemic.” The possibility that people might not want to attend large public gatherings if it might kill them or their family, or might value the lives of their elderly relatives highly enough to stay home for a few weeks rather than watch them die in their thousands, was not considered….

how far into the future will it be before people can casually, or even incidentally, or accidentally swap breathable air again, without fear of potential serious consequence

No No No No No No They Were Meant To Die For The Economy Must Grow And Waiting Lists To Shrink From High Piled Bodies No Longer Needing Medicine ¡
The number of people waiting for hospital treatment in England has hit a record high of 5.7 million as the NHS struggles to clear the growing backlog of care worsened by the pandemic.
The waiting list is rising by about 100,000 a month as more people who did not seek or could not access NHS treatment over the past 18 months visit a GP and are referred to hospital. The number of patients waiting more than two years has risen to nearly 10,000.
Meanwhile, accident and emergency departments treated more than 1.39 million patients in September – the highest number recorded for the month, according to figures from NHS England.

I can’t remember. Our German nurse friend did Reiki. He was also a masseur. As well as having been in charge of operating theatres. We forgave Willi a lot of his idiosyncrasies. He’d been a political prisoner in East Germany when he was in his teens, after the war. It definitely did bad things to his psyche.

Victoria has become the first Australian state to require all MPs to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be barred from parliament.
Four members voted against the bill, including Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party MP Jeff Bourman, Liberal Democrat MPs David Limbrick and Tim Quilty, and independent MP Catherine Cumming.
During debate on the bill, Ms Cumming accused the government of using the mandate to silence members who might oppose the extension of emergency powers during the pandemic.
“This seems to be a blatant attempt to make it easier for the government to get this legislation passed, and I know so,” she said.
“By reducing the numbers in this house, they reduce the number of votes they need to gain from the crossbench.”
Ms Cumming proposed an amendment that would allow MPs to enter the parliament building if they passed a rapid antigen test, but the amendment was rejected.
The bill earlier passed the Lower House, with Liberal MP Neil Angus the only member to vote against it.

Reiki is a pseudoscience, and is used as an illustrative example of pseudoscience in scholarly texts and academic journal articles. It is based on qi (“chi”), which practitioners say is a universal life force, although there is no empirical evidence that such a life force exists.
Clinical research does not show reiki to be effective as a treatment for any medical condition, including cancer, diabetic neuropathy, or anxiety and depression; therefore it should not replace conventional medical treatment. She claims she’s issued “about 600 certificates” and has charged “up to $150 each”. Let’s be conservative and say she’s earned more than $30k from the venture. Is a fine of “up to $10k” really appropriate?

NSW to end to hotel quarantine November 1.
“In addition, probably the most significant announcement we are making is an end to quarantine.” Mr Perrottet says.
“From November 1st, those people returning Australians and tourers who want to come back, who want to visit Australia and coming to Sydney, hotel quarantine will be a thing of the past.
People will need to do a PCR test before they board the flight and will need to show proof of your double vaccination.
“For double vaccinated people around the world, Sydney, New South Wales is open for business,” he says.
“We want people back. We are leading the nation out of the pandemic.

A universal theme on Sorry AntiVaxxer is the call for urgent prayers! from anti-vaxx activists dying of Covid, and their relatives.
of course you’re anti-covid really, not pro-endemic-covid, surely not secretly pro-endemic-covid, or swayed toward notions that amount to the same as that latter
how far into the future will it be before people can casually, or even incidentally, or accidentally swap breathable air again, without fear of potential serious consequence
is there a hint in covid wards, medical staff in full PPE, keeping to all the procedures, what are they avoiding, really
Not sure what your point is in addressing that to me, but for the record, most anti-vaxxers are also anti-maskers, anti-social distancing, anti-lockdown etc.
that’s sort of an appeal to a stereotype, really, isn’t it, hunting down the irrational, work for the hunters of irrationality, for those of superior rationality
most people are in some way anti-those-things, generally nobody wants to spread disease such that it results in requiring more vaccinations than is necessary, certainly don’t want to be on a treadmill of vaccinations, people don’t want to be inconvenienced by masks, have to monitor proximity all the time, or avoid going outside their homes to an extreme extent, or stock their homes with many months of supplies
I guess it all helps as a distraction though, helps the pro-endemic-covid message slip in the back door

the biggest issue for me is not the change in policy per se (ultimately this was always going to happen at some point), but the fact that NSW seem to be charging forward at a rate much faster than everyone else. NSW were given an unproportional (by population) allocation of vaccine supply (and rightly so at the time) which allowed them to achieve a level of vaccination that was much higher than all other states. Now that they are ahead, they really should be waiting for slower runners to catch up.

no what I was saying is that at the time NSW were given a leg up, because at the time they needed it… no other states are deliberately holding back vaccination to spite the feds.. but if this is going to act now, then maybe a more equitable approach should have been to distribute the additional doses that the feds got to all states instead of just NSW.

could be worse than rude, given the holding of borders, various measures to limit bidirectional covid traffic by other States, low levels of covid in other States, were (are) large contributor to NSW being able to manage well as it has

I object to NSW declaring that they are leading the nation in their response to Covid and the reopening. If it wasn’t for their bungling in the first place we would not have had such a severe Covid outbreak.
I think my state (WA) has done reasonably well in keeping Covid out. I know it is only a temporary thing, but the reopening should only happen when everyone who wants to be vaccinated has been and had their second dose, plus a short grace period after that. There’s always going to be some who refuse to be vaccinated, but they can take their chances. We should not be reopening until the vaccine rollout has been done. It should not be for plague states to dictate policy to the non-plague states.

you can’t become a reiki master until you pay for a course and drag others into starting a reiki course..
I don’t know where Willi (our friend) learnt his Reiki (it would have been 40 or more years ago I guess) but I doubt he was involved in any schemes like that. But he may have done it in Germany, they do tend to some alternative stuff there.

one of the PCA’s in the spinal ward claimed to be a reiki master and would reiki the patients in halo prison and halo vests all the time… It was weird and he claimed to have cured people or given them more functionality than they would have had.. which is ok, but no way to check so he was probably full of shit.

I know Willi’s nursing qualifications were legit. And I know he also worked as a masseur before he came to Australia. But I never asked him where he picked up Reiki. He died a couple of years ago before he came back to Australia. He was very unsettled as a person because of his earlier experiences and didn’t seem able to settle well.

I definitely view reiki as more a massage without the movement than medical treatment… it’s about the flow of the earth through the practitioners body and apply that energy, in the form of heat, to the part of the body.. or something like that.
I think it can also be described as a really effective way to dupe vulnerable people out of their money.

I’m not sure Willi sold his Reiki services. In fact I think it was mostly something he did with his partner. He was partner and carer to a wheelchair bound artist when we first met him, so the massage was part of that. Later he married another fellow. He gave me a massage a couple of times (which is not something I would normally have) and he certainly seemed to know what he was doing there. He also knew we thought the Reiki was a bit out there.

Laugh Out Loud*
Let’s go, fuck the kids who have the longest to deal with it, minimum vaccination age Australia is 12 years, Let It Rip™ now, before the approval for the 5 to 12 year olds, before the 2 to 5 year olds, before the election which is the most important thing obviously.
https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/the-new-frontier-israeli-hopsitals-contend-with-long-covid-in-children-1.10280661
“What’s interesting, is that in some of the children, it really appears as a direct continuation of severe illness but in very many of the children, there is a severe illness, followed by a lull of several months and only then do the symptoms of long COVID begin,” says Ashkenazi-Hoffnung.
According to her, the persistence of the symptoms varies. “There are children for whom it takes half a year or more. For example, we had a boy here who was a competitive swimmer and came down with long COVID and was very anxious and in pain. After half a year he went back to swimming and even broke a personal record.”
However, she also says that there are “a few children here who, a year after the illness, haven’t recovered, and they have symptoms that are affecting their day-to-day functioning. There are cases in which it lasts for more than a year.”
“I think there is an underestimation,” says Ashkenazi Hoffnung, “even in the research studies, because of their methods, and the numbers are higher. That said, not all symptoms have the same significance. The essential question is whether it affects functioning. If, for example, a child loses the sense of taste and smell for eight months and that leads to picky eating, this is not necessarily clinically significant compared to symptoms that damage functioning and prevent the child from doing the things he loves.”
For example, there are children for whom physical activity was an important part of their lives. “Fifteen percent of the children who come to us trained in various sports for three or four hours a day six days a week, and after the coronavirus they can’t even walk for five minutes. Their parents and sometimes the doctors don’t always connect this to the coronavirus.”
“These children aren’t spoiled or depressed – they are dealing with physical damage that is part of long COVID and they want to go back to their activities. I am sure there are other children who suffer from the same phenomenon, but it isn’t noticed because it doesn’t affect their routine. Some of them are sitting at home playing Fortnite and don’t know they are incapable of walking for five minutes, that they have these symptoms.”
*: not at the suffering but at the fucking idiocy around the world and what can you do but laugh when that’s all there is left

The decision to classify the parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents as immediate family, opening the door for them to travel into the country, has been met with relief, excitement and some trepidation.
Since Australia’s international borders shut in March 2020, only immediate family members were able to get exemptions to visit
But parents were excluded from this classification, leading to a campaign for change
—
Well obviously we didn’t have parents overseas trying to get back to Australia but wait what, parents weren’t immediate family members ¿¡
So political au pairs get exemptions but parents of commoners aren’t family, wegedit.

For most of us, the past two years have been spent wearing masks, washing our hands, and staying away from society to reduce the spread of COVID-19. According to a recent article published in the journal Nature Reviews Microbiology, these measures may have been doing twice as much good as we realized.
It’s an unintended – though certainly welcome – casualty of the world’s improved awareness of disease prevention: researchers at the University of Melbourne are suggesting that certain flu strains might now be extinct. The number and diversity of the surviving strains have been badly hit too, and even certain common cold viruses are feeling the heat.
“The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has seen a notable global reduction in influenza cases of both influenza A and B viruses,” explain the authors. “In particular, the B/Yamagata lineage has not been isolated from April 2020 to August 2021, suggesting that this influenza lineage may have become extinct, which may provide opportunities for improving availability and effectiveness of influenza vaccines.”
There are four types of flu virus: A, B, C, and D – though as humans, we really only need to worry about A and B, since type C generally causes only mild illness and type D only infects cattle. Influenza A, fast-changing and diverse, is the type that causes pandemics. Influenza B clades – for example, B/Yamagata – tend to be confined to seasonal flu outbreaks.
Despite Influenza B types being slower to evolve, epidemiologists still get to see a few dozen or so new viruses develop per month. Since March 2020, however, there have been no B/Yamagata viruses detected at all. Even certain Influenza A viruses have been reduced, with the number of detections of H1N1 (aka swine flu) and H3N2 viruses dropping an order of magnitude year on year.
“Influenza virus detections dropped dramatically from April 2020, with a ~99% reduction compared with previous years despite roughly similar levels of testing,” the paper confirms. “Behavioural changes (social distancing, mask wearing and hygiene measures) and travel and movement restrictions are thought to be the major factors driving the reduction in influenza incidence, which was also observed for other common respiratory infections such as respiratory syncytial virus.”
It’s important not to get carried away here – there’s a chance, the paper warns, that B/Yamagata has “merely gone into hiding.” Influenza B viruses have been known to go “dormant” before, and for surprisingly long time periods too – B/Victoria, the strain which dominated cases in the early 2000s, was barely seen at all through the 1990s.
However, if B/Yamagata really has gone the way of the dodo, it could be very good news for vaccine distribution. Current flu vaccines often aim to protect against four seasonal flu strains: Influenzas A/H1N1, A/H2N3, B/Yamagata, and B/Victoria. Taking B/Yamagata out of this cocktail and moving instead to a three-in-one shot could allow around 200 million more people to receive a vaccine, the paper says.
Alternatively, the authors suggest, vaccines could keep their four-in-one structure, but replace B/Yamagata with a second sub-clade of A/H2N3. That would solve the current annual pharmaceutical dilemma over which sub-clade would be the best choice to protect against in the coming flu season.
“Time will tell whether the B/Yamagata lineage is gone for good,” the paper concludes. “ elimination of one of the four current vaccine targets would have favourable implications for annual influenza vaccine reformulation, with opportunities for rational rethinking of optimal strategies to further reduce global influenza burden.”

Which influenza viruses will emerge following the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic?
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/irv.12866#irv12866-fig-0001
I’ve got a question, which I think poik might be able to help with. In Figure 1, which shows testing levels and positive test results, why do the Australian and US graphs show COVID19 peaks with flu testing peaks, but the other countries don’t seem to do that. I understood that the COVID19 testing being done en masse here (I don’t know about America) was only being checked for COVID19 because of the time constraints.

Why did Perotey get rid of the sign language interpreters from the pressers?
probably because it raises covid to the status of requiring intervention, by the State, States, by government, when the program is to rapidly roll back intervention, devolve the issue to individuals etc, to make it less of a government issue
it’s part of the new message the emergency is over

Yeah, but it must be fairly effective as i’ve never heard of anyone getting it in Oz in the last 40 or 50 years.

When professional musician Claire Edwardes tested positive for COVID-19 last week, she was initially embarrassed to tell anyone as she was the first in her circle of friends and family to catch the disease.
Despite feeling like a “novelty act”, she said her experience was likely to become more common as restrictions were lifted.
“There’s only this sense of shame associated with it because it is such a new thing here in Australia to actually contract the disease,” she said.
“This is going to happen to everyone and at least I’m getting it out of the way early.”

the sense of shame is appropriate but it’s not meant to be for catching a disease, it’s actually for the attitude that it will happen to everyone

Right but doesn’t that just tell us about the benefits of elimination¿
We mean, if poliomyelitis causes severe disease / significant complication / death / paralysis in say 1% of the population, and the vaccine is 1% ineffective, then you wouldn’t see any problems in Australia until you hit around 10000 cases.

went had a look starting reading that, full of pretensions to naivety, innocence, fit for media, was my impression
almost a mode of operation you could say, projecting into the aether with innocence, and using statements that have a sort of innocent unknown about them, the reader is inclined to empathize, feel same or similar, believe they do for the purpose of understanding
the device appears to be in the notion, or notions related, that peoples’ mental states are carried, or equilibrium maintained by social reassurance (normal) which is not far removed from they ought be, of course it’s not untrue, but it doesn’t exactly incline reflection regard pretensions to innocent naivety
imagine media is your mummy or daddy for a moment, it gets you there, a starter for thinking about it

The difference in Qld is that the government has decided that it’s best to try to buy as much time as possible for the vaccination programme, as this will, in the longer term, incur a lower economic cost to the State as a whole. They’re certainly trying everything they can to make the programme work (not entirely their fault if some Qlders are thick), and it has the added benefit of being able to be dressed up as being done ‘for the people’. Which it is, but the economy is there in the equation, too, if not mentioned.
Gladys dithered too long in NSW, under pressure from lobbies to go for shorter-term immediate commercial goals, and it got away from her. At least the Qld Premier can now point to NSW and tell the lobbyists here to shove it.

tell me the promise of a vaccine and immunity doesn’t result in people relaxing their attitudes toward covid, that’s in not a phenomenon, it’s not real, and potentially dangerous
tell me vaccination hasn’t been used to release the virus to accommodate endemic status, encourage ideas to get that done
if you ran a poll, or vote, teased out peoples views on that, put it very frankly, i’d expect the numbers would not favor vaccination being used as vote to let covid go wild

It may well be a strategy for generating acceptance of the virus as ‘endemic’, but it’s a much more humane one than the NSW govt’s ‘let the bodies fall where they will’ approach.
As for the poll thing…well, some here have called me ‘cynical’ in the past, but i don’t think that i can compete with you in that field.

Yup. The reality is that contact tracing is hard (and useless) enough as it is, and will be even moreso when the majority of the carriers are asymptomatic. So the best metric for gauging its prevalence in the community will be hospitalisation rates.

You’ll be happy to know that we can’t be bothered today so we leave it at this.

Gee, we wonder if there is another country with a formerly good public healthcare system that has been operating close to capacity but is now under bursting pressure thanks to Dying With COVID-19¿
And we wonder if Gaslighting Corruption Coalitions might not be trying to take the opportunity to fuck up their own local version of a similar system.
But Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he had handed out enough cash, and states not ready had failed to prepare. “You’ve got to prepare for what’s coming,” Mr Morrison said. “The pandemic has been running a long time now. “The work that needs to be done frankly should’ve been done for the last 18 months.”
Mr Morrison said the states already dealing with outbreaks appeared to be managing the extra pressure on hospitals. “New South Wales and Victoria have been able to plan for the COVID surge, they’re in the middle of it, they have the same funding arrangements as any other state and territory, but they’re dealing with it,” he said. “We’re seeing stresses on hospital systems in other states and territories which have nothing to do with COVID.”
We wonder if a large part of that system is under the banner “Medicare” and although previously political campaigns have successfully exploited fear of losing it, this time around apparently nobody cares.

Is that from a satire site somewhere?

Any minute now, they’ll be telling us how this could never have happened under a fully privatised health care system.

There’s things you don’t do e.g you don’t wear medals you didn’t earn, you don’t put on le kepi blanc unless you are/were a Legionnaire, and you certainly don’t appropriate the yellow star.

Religion on religion bigotry is the worst!
Imagine getting all the way to Mecca, queuing up for ages, and then being stropped at the door, and being told ‘no, mate, not in that religious/political/social mindset’.

‘stropped’ should read ‘stopped’.

Up to 43,000 people may have been given false negative Covid tests from private contractor testing lab in England. They ran about 400,000 tests all up. Yay for the private sector during an emergency.

There can be fuck ups in government run projects just as readily. As long as there is some oversight and thing get picked up and improvements made, things will progress.

Don’t really think it matters now that the bulk of the population is vaccinated and showing zero symptoms.

The situation in the UK is not really under control IMHO. Looked at the Worlometer numbers earlier today.
I hope we don’t use them as a model to follow as we emerge from closed borders back into the world.

Some important things in batch assay testing (rocks, water samples, medical samples etc):
- blanks,
- duplicates,
- standards, and
- separation of identification data from assay ID.
If the lab notifies you of your status, then the last thing on that list hasn’t been done. That probably means that other things may not have been done. This indicates testing procedures and auditable checks have been poorly designed.
