I was listening intently to Paddy and his team in my early teens, revealing the world of authentic but innovative Irish instrumental folk music, and its relationship to the rest of the European traditional music being re-explored at the time. Saw him in concert in Adelaide in the ’70s, and they were even better than on the records. A very fine piper on the king of all pipes, the chromatic two-octave Uilleann pipes, but also an expert on the tin whistle.
Guardian takes up the story:
Paddy Moloney, who has died aged 83, was a founder and the leader of the Chieftains, a band that made Irish traditional music famous across the globe. A composer, arranger of traditional music and innovative musician on the tin whistle and the uilleann pipes, Moloney was a towering influence in Irish music for more than six decades. His ambition for the band and his love of music led to a long series of collaborations on stage and on record with a wide variety of performers, some from the pop and rock world and others who made traditional music from a variety of cultures.

They used this version of Drowsy Maggie to highlight each player’s skills, and the piping break demonstrates Paddy’s ultra-precise piping.

Chieftains, the Battle of Aughrim. Paddy’s innovative instinct is on fine display here, especially in the final (traditional) tune, where the wailing pipes represent the tragedy of it all, at tuneful odds with the tune itself.

I saw The Chieftains at Sydney Town Hall many years ago.
In the Lower Town Hall, there was rows and rows of seats set up, and the audience sat and waited for the show to start.
The band came out, did the intros and how-d’ye-dos, and began to play.
After the first number, the audience spontaneously got up, shoved the seats back against the walls, and it was dancing and suchlke for the rest of the show.

The pub across the road (i can see it in my mind’s eye, but the name escapes me) did a roaring trade that night.
Apparently, it’s now a sodding ‘opals and pearls’ shop which seeks to separate Asian tourists from their money.

I remember some pipes and drums at the town hall. Mostly it was speech day with me in my little white dress in the choir.

It was a night to remember…
My other big Town Hall moment was when i just wandered in there one day, around lunch time, and there was an organist practicing on the BIG organ.
He was playing Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ and really going to town (hall?) on it. Only time i’ve ever seen the organ played
I looked around and there was no-one else. Just him and me. Sure, the lower notes were vibrating through the very foundations, but that was it in the hall. Him and me.
I was transported.
He finished, and i applauded. A single person’s applause in the whole place He looked over his shoulder, smiled, nodded, and gathered his music sheets
I have no idea who he was.

I have played that organ.I think it was Schubert’s To Music and the intro of a Whiter shade of pale. What I remember was a feeling of power.

I made friends with a CofE rector at one stage. I liked the church because the organ was lovely. And the acoustics were great. I have an Etsy harmonium. It’s not the same as the 12 cylinder models.

Well recommended for the Glastonbury concert, a splendid gig with lots of views of the audience having a fine time indeed, innocent days.
Paddy of course is not the first Chieftain to have left us. Martin Fay, the fine bald fiddler and bones player in this concert, went his way in 2012.
Derek Bell, the eccentric but very capable harpist, died in 2002.
A few of the line-up from the 70’s have also gone the way of all flesh.
