> Jennifer West, a research associate at the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics, is making a scientific case that two bright structures seen on opposite sides of the sky—previously considered to be separate—are actually connected and are made of rope-like filaments. The connection forms what looks like a tunnel around our solar system.
That’s new.
> Made up of charged particles and a magnetic field, the structures are shaped like long ropes. They are located about 350 light-years away from us, and are about 1,000 light-years long.
That’s not just the solar system. It’s … the Gould’s Ring?
“A luminous, rotating ring or belt of star-forming regions of molecular clouds and very bright, young, and massive bluish stars are located within 1,600 light-years (500 parsecs or pc) of Sol. Commonly called Gould’s Belt or Ring”
So this new structure is roughly the size of the Gould’s Ring, a bit smaller. But is it aligned with it in any way?
From following diagram, there’s a connection of the new structure to the Local Bubble which in turn is connected to Gould’s Ring. I can see some interesting Milky Way simulations in the future.
