Subject: Pumpkins

I have started a thread for this question because I would like to know the answer. Could be missed in the chat thread.

I have a question about pumpkins too. Like yours (Longfellow) our vine is still growing crazily but it is only producing lady flowers. For a couple of weeks I was trying to make sure some of them were pollinated by doing it myself but the bloke flowers were very puny ( I really want to make an extra comment in here but I won’t) Now there aren’t any man flowers on the vine at all. My question…Is it near the end of it’s life or will it make more male flowers in time. The really strange part is that the vine is sending out lots of new growth and It’s been there for so long now I would have thought that it should be getting near it’s time to go to the big pumplin in the sky.

I reckon your pumkin has run its course. It may regenerate in Spring/Summerbut it is likely to become diseased quite quickly.
I’d use it for compost asnd plant a new vine next season.

So here are the remaining harvested pumpkins
Still a bunch on the vine, some almost ready, some infants. I have easily given away 70 i reckon. There are more than 50 in the foto. Probably gonna pick a few more yet.

awesome. you know, I don’t see Qld blues in the stupidmarkets anymore. they used to be one of the staples in the vege section. Although it is good that we have a bigger range now, I wonder why the Qld Blue fell off the shelf.

Thanks Mr Longfellow. What a bluddy pain that is. You spend weeks waiting for female flowers and now it’s all female flowers and no males.
I’ll compost it but it won’t be easy. It’s an anti climax.

OH for a climate to grow a pumpkin as bountiful as that.

it is all about marketing… Woolworths didn’t own the rights to Qld Blues… if you get frosts at all they will turn most of your pumpkin vine to mush..

I’d just go over it with a spade and chop it into smaller pieces and leave them there to rot.

7KG is a decent size for a jap. About average for a good Bluey tho i’d reckon.
I wasn’t showing off. Someone demanded proof so there it is.
I had a bit of a count of the ones still on the vine. Maybe 25 or so. Wonder if they’ll grow to maturity or if a frost will cull them. I hope we get a frost. That’ll make the remaining ones long keepers.

I know you weren’t showing off because I read the request for a photo in a previous post too. I didn’t mean to offend. It’s just my way of disguising my jealousy. Show Off!!!
