In the early days, China was going to be this huge new market, a billion people just slavering for the products of the West, a great El Dorado of a market, where anyone and anything could make vast fortunes.

Then it became everyone’s factory, where most of them worked for peanuts while a (comparatively) small number made lots of money producing the goods which the West could flog to various markets, including China. The market in China wasn’t going to be as big as first thought, but it was still way big enough, with enough people cashed up and still hungry to buy at any price you cared to name.

Then comes China’s ‘you GAGF’ phase, where they say no, we won’t buy your stuff any more.

So, Western business had to go back to how it was before China became a customer, and hey, whaddaya know, we don’t do all that badly without China. Maybe they aren’t such a terrific market after all.

The chief benefit of Chinese economic growth to foreign countries is the cheaper products they exported to the rich world. Both counter-inflationary and a boost to real wages. Unless you live in a shithole like the US where despite China wages have stagnated for 30 years.

I think it goes like this, we export our goods to a third country and China imports those good from the third country.
All good.

Not much good for folks who fatten cattle, they have to buy weaners at high prices which offsets the high prices they get for finished cattle at the market.
Folks who have breeding herd, well they are laughing.

Overtly criticising China’s expansionism and human rights abuses, and basically assuming that trade-wise they need us as much as we need them so their retaliation can’t be absolute

true it’s almost as if political posturing and economic trade are different international matters even if they are connected

Morrison is the cause of the Chinese angst. Sucking up to Trump by asking for an enquiry. This prime example of the Peter Principle should henceforth be referred to as the Barbers Cat.

Lots of organisations and countries have asked for an enquiry including the WHO, the USA, EU etc. There’s even been a call for a second go round but the Chinese have basically said ‘get stuffed, we’re not playing’.

Dear China

China is the only country in the world with a government intelligent enough to stop Covid. Keep at it.

Dear China

  • Don’t import any food from any country with Covid. Covid can be carried on food.
  • Stop coal imports in order to appease the environmental apocalypticists.
  • You know you can make everything you need inhouse.

China is the only country in the world with a government intelligent enough to stop Covid. Keep at it.

They’re pretty sharp cookies.

Covid isn’t the only thing they’re good at stopping.
