Oops, maybe some content with that, huh?
Time to change ISPs. Dodo is going to the pack, internet drop outs frequent, almost on a regular schedule.
Help/assistance is poor. Philippines-based, god knows what set-up (one bloke i got yesterday was clearly on a mobile phone, in what sounded like an iron foundry, interspersed with someone’s loud radio in the background, when the signal wasn’t completely broken/garbled).
Thinking of Aussie Broadband. May cost an extra $10 or so. Don’t want to use their Netcomm modem, as reviews generally pan it as having very poor wi-fi capability.
Comments on Aussie Broadband?
On other ISPs?
On modems (note: need VOIP port for the phone)?
I use Telstra and their supplied modem. I have little choice here.
The modem switches to the mobile network if the fixed-line NBN is down. When something goes wrong (eg a blackout or some other problem) it takes quite a while for the modem to re-boot. Maybe 15 minutes or so.
Telstra includes the home telephone in the cost. Others don’t.
They’ve put the prices up $20 per month since I got the NBN connected, which is annoying. On the plus side it is now unlimited. I had originally chosen a 25 Gb/month plan, after working out that I rarely exceed 20 Gb/month.

Current price is $80/month.

I’ve been with Aussie Broadband for a couple of years and they have been great.
I returned their Netcomm modem and went back to my old Netgear, and at that time they were already talking about changing the modem brand they offer, so I’m surprised that they are still with Netcomm.
Their customer service/technical support staff have extensive knowledge in their field and have never failed to get an issue resolved during the call.
with activ8me. $69 per month unlimited. fixed wireless so dunno about modem of whether their other services are any good. call centre melbourne. good for me.

I will add a +1 to Speedy’s comment.
We changed to Aussie when we moved into this new house a few months ago. We’d been dealing with the nightmare that was Optus prior to that and it was a night and day comparison. We still had a few issues with the NBN install and cutovers as it was a new build but the people at Aussie guided us through it all. They were a pleasure to deal with, the call centre is located in Sale – I think.

Any particular Asus device that you’re thinking of?

Think it depends on the type of connection you have. Netgear has good name.
Keep a very long way from iiNet. I was with them for a while. Frequent dropouts (over a wired NBN line), extremely slow (their advertising claims “typical evening speed” of around 4Mbps; the best I ever got from them was around 400kbbs; frequent DNS lookup failures. utterly worthless support (spend half an hour on the phone waiting for them and they disconnect; when I finally did get to talk to someone, they said they couldn’t resolve the issue immediately and they’d call me back. I’m still waiting.)
I have no idea how these jackasses stay in business.

Thanks for the advice, but you’ll be relieved to learn that iiNet has never entered into my calculations.
I’ve already heard from a couple of sources that they exist largely in name and invoice alone.

The reason I tried the Netcomm was because it had a Voip port and my Netgear did not. When I returned the Netcomm modem, AB suggested that I instead use some sort of Voip adapter device with the Netgear, which was available from them for about $100, but by that time I had decided it was time to pack the landline away permanently. IIRC, there was no suitable Netgear modem available with a Voip port.

No, but the Analogue Terminal Adapter that you mention will allow connection of a phone to just about any NBN modem.
I use Spintel.
$49.95 for unlimited NBN.
$9.95 a month for unlimited mobile calls and texts with 4GB mobile data. No need for a VOIP land line.

We use optus. We had a horror connection that would cut in and out at least every 20 mins when we first joined them and their inability to fix the problem even after at least 8 tech guys came out to look at it, 6 different modems and then them just telling us we have no fucking idea why its happening and at this point we are not going to even try any more you can get out of your contract or we can work something out. The connection itself was fine when it was running would just cut out a lot
I told them i want refund on the 4 months of interwebs we had already paid them and I want to be on the highest speed you have and ill give you twenty bucks a month
they said yes so we resigned and away we went.
Within a week or so it for whatever reason it fixed itself and we have been paying that amount for the last 4 years with no more than a disconnect here and there every few weeks.
YES!

Hmm…
…so maybe i should try bitching long and loud to my current ISP and see if i can cut a better deal?
Interesting. I can be an almighty pain in the arse, and i hardly have to work at it.

Hey CS,
I can send you a referral code and we will both get $50 off our bills, or someone else here might be able to refer you.

Most kind of you.
I’m yet to buy myself a modem/router, which i’d prefer to do as the one that Aussie Broadband provides doesn’t have that good a rep for performance, and i’ll end up paying for it anyway, buried in the regular bills.

I just gave the code to my stepfather this morning when he signed up with them, which is why I suggested it to you here, and he has now signed up with them. He was offered either one month free, which for him as a senior was $55, or the use of the code for $50. He of course chose the one month free, as you should too.
