Morning all.
For me: Not.
It seems mainly a way to share data between devices. I don’t need to do that.
Onedrive (which has been around for ages) does that anyway.
I was all set to start the “upgrade” process, when I noticed that Microsoft was giving unusually strong prominence to the option to not do it just yet, which seemed like a clear warning there might be stuff in there I don’t like.

W10 informed me about upgrading to W11 then eventually told me that my computer is not supported. I think the chip or chipset doesn’t have some inbuilt feature. (Possibly a feature to spy on me…)

It’s well on the path that leads to you not owning your computer, as it’s more restrictive than any previous version. I had a chat about it with a friend of mine at the local tech club and he was far from impressed by it.
I’m going to hang on to W10 as long as possible then it’s likely I’ll swap over to Linux. I’ll have to keep a W10 partition though as some of the stuff I have only works on Windows.

I’d say no for several reasons, including the fact that most computers older than about 9 months won’t support it. W10 was similar: many people took advantage of the free upgrade, only to find that their hardware wasn’t up to it, but they couldn’t go back to their previous OS and had to buy a new computer (with W10 preinstalled.) Windows also seems to be following macOS’s lead in that it’s become little more than a shopfront where you can buy more stuff from Microsoft (or Apple, in the case of macOS.)
From: https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/worst-windows-11-features-fix-them
On the other hand, there are some solid reasons to upgrade to Windows 11 right now, including :
better window snapping options,
– already have a separate app for that

Microsoft tried that with Office (365 I think) Pay a monthly subscription & work in the cloud.
I have an Office 365 subscription. I think it’s reasonable value and you don’t have to work “in the cloud”. In fact anyone who uses VBA will not work in the cloud (except for sharing files, if they want to).

I say yes to everything on the internet because life’s too short.

That reminds me, I went to use MS Word yesterday and it complained out it not being registered anymore. I think I’ve got a crack for it somewhere but I’ll probably just get an Office free alternative instead.

Mr buffy’s subscription was for 3 computers and a couple of months ago it turned off two of them, saying not registered. But it was from a long time ago. I just went back to the old work computer which is pre all that stuff on which Word still works because it’s not involved in any way with the Internet.

In the switch from 32 bit to 64 bit I couldn’t get some stuff to work. I fired up an old Vista machine, extracted the data & transferred it via stick to the 64 bit machine.
Mr buffy’s main computer still runs Word. His lappy and my networked one in the other room lost the ability. I can read the documents but can’t do anything with them. But I can go to his computer and get them through the network and work on them from there if I want to. There isn’t much I can’t live without. And for the patient reports I just turn on the old work system and work in that. I won’t be doing reports for a lot longer.

My PC is a new build and has the new security features but none of our other PCs or laptops are under 3 years old, so will no doubt cause an issue. I might upgrade the PC just to see what will happen.
I just kept buying the Office suites via Defence, which gave me Office for $14.99. I got Project and Visio, each for the same price. I’m sticking with them for as long as possible as I don’t like paying MS each year.

Windows 3.11 was great – I used to tile my desktop with different folders, eg. separate folders for work, games, system tools, new documents, multimedia software, office, music, etc. So I could open everything I would ever need from desktop with a single click. Windows NT lost that functionality and kept destroying my carefully curated selection of desktop icons. And Windows 7 lost all the free computer games such as pinball.
I’ve stuck to Windows 7, because the attempt to switch to Windows 10 ended up in an infinite reboot loop the first time there was an automatic update.
PS. I always switch off Windows updates. There have been very few updates that are better than useless.
Is there anything on Windows 11 that is better than Windows 7? Or worse?
I have only a 32 bit computer here, which makes it impossible for me to do certain things, such as write Android apps.

Nobody does separate partitions anymore. Grab a copy of Vmware and setup as many different versions of Windows, Linux, etc as you like inside virtual machines.

There are ways to upgrade to Windows 11 regardless of what the Windows 11 compatibility test decides.

Ta. Not nearly as good, that’s basically drop down folders.
My current desktop looks like this.
Multimedia utilities top right. Puctuation and affirmations middle right. Games bottom right. Office top middle, Writing sheet music left of top middle. Browsers bottom middle. Quick links to pictures, documents and music middle left. Brown background for maximum icon visibility.
But it would be very nice if I could put boxes around each category, which I used to do in Windows 3.11.
I wonder if there’s a website doing a direct comparison of the positive and negative values of each version of Windows.
I know it’s not to everyone’s taste, but I use Total Commander to navigate my folders and find the files I want. I almost never use anything on the desktop.
The only time I use File Explorer is if I want to do a search of file contents. It indexes the contents of text files, pdfs etc, so the search is very fast (if you have set it up), and the file preview is also pretty good.

(Possibly a feature to spy on me…)
There are relatively simple ways around this if you decide to upgrade.

It’s a security feature to stop rootkits et al which can be incredibly difficult to remove and or see.

QEMU can emulate a 64bit processor on 32bit hardware. You would probably want to have plenty of RAM to make it work satisfactorily.

My computer came up and told me that it isn’t good enough for Win 11. I was actually quite surprised as it’s a reasonably new processor.

Is it not available only to those who have kept up with the Joneses with regard to their PCs capabilities, and all the Luddites with PCs that are a couple of years old aren’t allowed to have it?
