With the proviso that this was funded by dairy interests, it’s still interesting, and made it into the British Medical Journal. So was it the dairy, or was it that nursing home diets aren’t so good?

> Improving calcium and protein intakes by using dairy foods is a readily accessible intervention that reduces the risk of falls and fractures commonly occurring in aged care residents.

Not for lactose intolerant. They only looked at dairy foods as sources of calcium.

“Experts estimate that about 68 percent of the world’s population has lactose intolerance”.

The amounts used were considered to be within tolerance. It’s mentioned somewhere in the paper.

>>We classified dairy foods by using the Australian Dietary Guidelines, with a “serving” defined as 250 mL of milk, 200 g of yoghurt, and 40 g of cheese.12 Lactose-free options were provided to accommodate the few participants (<0.001%) with reported lactose intolerance. Butter, cream, and ice cream were not provided, as they contain little calcium or protein. All facilities prepared and cooked foods on site. We assigned intervention facilities a food service dietician to assist food service staff to increase the provision of dairy foods at all meals and snacks. Methods used to increase dairy foods included use of milk powder to fortify milk used in recipes and beverages. Dairy based desserts and snacks were offered in place of less nutritious foods such as cakes and biscuits. Foods provided were based on the preferences expressed by the residents at intervention sites.<<

I don’t take supplements.
I’ve never deliberately eaten the bones of fish chicken or anything else.
Have always avoided offal.
To top it off, have not partaken of fish products for 63 years, chicken for 65 years and all meat products since 1974.
No doctor or dietician has ever suggested that I am short of any vitamin or mineral.

I thought that it was understood that calcium was in other food groups but the ease of access to dairy made it easy food choice.

Some people put soy under the spotlight for being a highly “Genetically Modified” crop nowadays as soy milk is not like for like in calcium quantity. Meaning not all soy milk is fortified with the same level of calcium per serve compared with dairy milk.

Reading the nutrition panels is essential if you swap a child’s calcium source from dairy to soy products exclusively. Some parents do swap from dairy to soy milk not realising that one glass of soy milk is not always equal to one glass of dairy milk.

I think most people would be surprised with the variation of calcium levels in soy milk products. .
