a total of 20mm since the rain began in adelaide. 9mm yesterday and last night.
only now can i begin to plant winter crops and its very late.
i have seedlings growing and manure spread.
now i have to fork over the ground and harden up the seedlings.
the bed i’m planting into has three deciduous trees that haven’t lost their leaves yet.

well it’s raining here this morning… It all started only minutes after I decided to go for a walk up the nearby mountain, and what started off as a light drizzle, became somewhat tropical by the time I returned… Still, half hour later, the rain is still falling.

My last trip to the rain metre was yesterday afternoon and we have had 272mms for the year so far… if this rain keeps up for the next two weeks, I should have 12months of data recorded and Moresby appears set to have had an average year of rain.

Don’t the peanut growers love it?

Do you find all this rain gets you down??? I ask this as I lurv rain……

Is it warm rain or cold rain…….
does it lay round on the ground for days on end or does it flow away as quick as it lands???

It’s warm rain and it was pleasant walking in it… It disappears very quickly although there are some swampy boggy areas around the place. It is getting quite steady now, and I would not be surprised if an inch is in the gauge, bringing the year to date to over the 300… here’s hoping its landing in my gauge.

and no, I don’t get down by the rain. Tropical rain when living in either Brownsville or Moresby is an uncommon event, so when it comes down, it’s exciting and I know how good it is for the gardens, and those precious peanut growers, bless ‘em.

But here’s something that is interesting, in the month of March, rain fell into my gauge on 23 days with the heaviest fall of 39mm

we do get some good lightning but I don’t associate them with Storms. We get a big build up drop down from the Owen Stanley Ranges and it will drop a few bolts of lightning around the place, but quite often no rain will fall with the lightning and there’s rarely any wind with it. Only during the first week of November when TC Guba was off the coast did we get wind, rain and stormy conditions… 250mm during that first week of November!

I have sat closer to the equator on some of the Islands and at night watched some good cracking lightning in the distance… no noise, no wind, no rain, no swell, just a glassy black ocean but with the odd lightning bolt way off in the distance, no street lights, no noise, no nothing… it gets very surreal.

not really, the Morata swamp is more used for hiding cars that have been car-jacked… but if it’s raining down here, then the Sogeri Plateau will be copping a bucket load, and that is where our dam is.

Farmers up here, tend to irrigate using the sky, there are not many farm dams and pumps around… I do know that my ground water and my bores will be healthy for this drop :)

Rain here… I have spread out the collected chicken & duck litter and spread either in a no-dig area or where the green manure will be going. Now the rain can wet it all down.

its weird up here, its not really raining until a inch has fallen and it feels like what is green after a 10mm fall in Adelaide, takes 50mm up here to replicate….

its like it rains hard, it disappears hard, it grows hard…. no easy kinda stuff.

its like its all relative. things won’t shoot off and get growing if just a passing shower wafts by… rain hard or go home.

yeah we did get a day recently when the temp dropped to 22C and only climbed to 24C and it was just “giarman” rain all day… I call it Adelaide mist and we got one or two of those in Townsville. Up in Atherton, it did it all the time :)

15mm in the rain gauge north of Luckyland.
beautiful – its this type of follow up rain that flushes the salts from the soil and builds up worm numbers.
(fingers crossed for drylander up north)

It’s raining again here in west Brisvegas too. I can’t say I’m overtly fond of winter rain; but I’m not about to start complaining. The outlook at the end of summer was that we would be returning to drought conditions this summer; so any rain this winter is a good thing.

I am a bit bummed that my rainwater collection isn’t in place yet :-(( Hearing all that water dribbling down the downpipes is annoying. I’m actually not missing out on much; the bird bath (an inch deep) isn’t full yet.

(No rain guage on this property – nowhere to put one, except the middle of the driveway. Everywhere else gets too much interference from trees. I might be able to rig one up in the middle of the veg patch; hadn’t considered that.

We have had over 2 inches but good rain because it’s taken a few days to fall. That means it’s soaked into the ground. Too often we get downpours that run off the surface. Temps have been mild too.

Tomorrow is another day tho. 4c min and 19max. Out come the big woollies.

We’re in the same part of the world, aren’t Pomolo? I don’t listen to the radio during school holidays (too busy sleeping) and we don’t have a TV, so I’ve missed that vital information. No idiot box, and you know what – it is possible to survive and thrive without one :-)) Most shows are available on DVD these days; GA is available to vodcast. If the ABC would vodcast Spicks and Specks I’d be happy. But we’ve lived without a puter for nearly 15 years, so there’s not too many shows I want to watch.

More computers than people though! And I just ordered another. The Girl’s DVD died and I think its actually the computer that’s had it. Horrid things. Pulled it apart, got it working (after a fashion), put it back together, and nothing. It’s always been slow, and its just getting worse.

To scan a single page takes a cup of coffee. The scanner is a bit of a problem. Just got given it, but it uses parallel port (the old fashion ones) and The Girl’s machine is the only with a port. So, on top of the expense of the new puter, I’ll have to splash out on a new scanner too :-((

you tried to post the page link with picture codes

ok so how do i get the page that you can post.

to use the web address you need to use the quotes and colon codes, or to get an image of the picture you need to right click over the rain map, select properties, then highlight the address of the picture and paste that into here in between two exclamation marks.

So you would have either (hopefully you will see the code and then the result)

Its raining here in west Bris. It was spitting a bit yesterday. Enough to dampen the gravel where it’s exposed; but not where the trees overhang. The little bit of the no-dig I watered was still a different colour to the rest. Then sometime last night it started drizzling and it’s still at it.

The BOM says there won’t be enough to reach the magic 40% mark in the dams :( We need 40% for them to ease back to Level 5 restrictions. Think that lets us bucket water things occassionally.

Still it’s perfect rain for the no-dig. Light and over a period of time; good for soaking in and through the whole thing.

Good lord. Perth would probably declare a state of emergency if we ever saw that many yellow pixels grin

Just under 2 inches of rain this month. Rain is forecast for the next week. Might not rain all day, but when it drops it drops heaps in 1 hit.

interesting that your ‘moon’ chart told you to plant corn on the 7th december and the following day it rains. this is not the first time your moon chart has been a ‘rain’ chart. i have followed your moon chart on three occasions over the past 3 years and on each occasion there has been rain soon after planting. three out of three is a very good average.
anyrate i planted corn and several above ground crops on the 6th december as well as two root crops. we shall see.
not a lot of rain here but still enough to be the equivalent of two hours watering.

Hello again…
I’ve come into this chat very late but the rainfall ytd here is somewhere between 1200 and 1800mls.
I know that sounds like ‘na na na na na’ but it’s not what I mean. It’s just the way it is.
I’m grateful to say that it’s raining at the moment which is a *&^#!@!^& relief from the stiffling heat and humidity.
The water runs away very quickly and our drainage systems are enormous. When a new suburb is being built we can see the size of the storm water pipes are big enough to walk through standing up.

Crinkle you lucky bugger, we are meant to get 1200 a year too, but so far only 613 has fallen… I was hoping for a repeat of Nov 2007 when 300mm fell… It has been a dry year despite the fact that we have had smaller falls over a greater period and the dry didnt seem so dry…

It’s so dry here the ground and paths have dried completely a couple hours after a few mls of rain earlier. I did manage to catch a few 100 litres though. I need it for the corn. In a couple weeks it’s now taller than me!

I am shocked at the mo’… the corn is not yet in the ground here in Moresby, usually after the first sign of rain, the corn and the peanuts are in…. the locals are being blase about this years wet.

Sounds nice :) You must be having a similar year to us so far – we’ve had about 21mm. So far in April we’ve had 5.2, the average is 44. Last year we had 153.6mm!!! – if it rains every day for the rest of April we might get close again??? hehe

I was about to open the door onenight but i usually wear a headlamp at night.. so I saw it before I grabbed it. Huge one. I used another door and left it to itself. It has a huge network of tunnels within a couple of metres from the back door and If I see it out and about it is rare indeed.

I don’t get too close to them! I see the trapdoor and make a mental note to give 2 metre radius berth around it!

Yes really have to be able to see much more of it—but Trap doors etc are a rather thick set spider—with shorter thicker legs

Love it! Love moths, I reckon they’re nature’s works of art…

I like them too but I have to be honest and say that I’m glad to see the back of them now the nights are getting cooler. They can be a bit of a pest in the bush. Every time we open the door they fly in for the light. Drives the dog insane (and therefore me as well) trying to catch them.

Should also mention here that the butterflies are out in force since our big wet.

Sure did and its made me sad……… really could do with some rain…..

Mount Crawford 6.8
Snowtown 26.2

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and damaging windn gusts in excess of 90 km/h in the warning area this evening. Locations which may be affected include Port Pirie, Snowtown, Lameroo and Jamestown.

Several locations in the Barossa Valley reported very heavy rainfall and squally winds.

Little bit of info for people who know SA. I heard Kersbrook had about 55 mm and Jacobs Creek about 33 mm

Funs all over…..thunderstorm warning is gone:(

Pooffff the did a dizzle fizzle

Does that mean that Jacob’s Creek may actually flow?

It’d be worth a look if it did… The old Syrah grapes grown at Jacob’s Crack used to be flood irrigated by the Creek during wet moments, but I think with modern irrigation and the local housing and industry not needing the Creek to flood anymore, it sometimes appears as a series of rock pools during rain events.

The last time I visited Langhorne Crack winery, they were still flood irrigating from their Creek, but that’s another tasty drop of vino….

We’re still not getting much by the way of rain, but for the last two days there’s been a cloudy mist sitting over Perth – so rather than rain falling on you, you sort of walk into it. It’s a nice change!!

Same with tomatoes, they copped a thorough hiding, and the rain came down so hard it shredded silverbeet. I’ve picked up leaves and fed to chooks :)

chuckle – 2mm of rain here yesterday – hopefully more to come.
hail would wreck all the veges. my sympathy. i’m glad to hear OC40’s strawbs escaped. if there is more to come i would be putting shade cloth over any precious veges.

Not too much damage done to the veges except the zucchini, which I was thinking of pulling out soon anyway. A bit of damage to the silverbeet and a couple of broken leaves on the broccoli but they will recover.

There was a cancellation of severe weather warning on the BOM about 4 am.
It hit at 6 am! lol.
Again we’re inundated ,and now the water is taking longer to drain away. It was gumboots on to get down the path and feed the poor sodden chooks.
Lot’s of work to do today, rake out chooks house and fresh staw in and mulch to replace on garden beds. I’m off to walk Max and have a look at the river :)

I had to go back through my records to Feb 2005 to find 2 consecutive days as good, where we got 120mm in one day!

great stuff!

The weeds are jumping out the ground :D

I gave the chooks a snail and watched the resulting Cluckingham Stakes race take place , all tearing round and round full pelt after the lead chicken ,it trying to stay in front and hold on to it’s booty, lol.

hee hee! My chooks don’t seem to be so interested in snails but the ducks love them!

Wet soil means easier to pull the weeds out!

hi Collie.
At least it’s cooler here, if very humid (not that I’m complaining about the rain!)

Low to mid twenties :)

My garden’s not so stoked.. the tomatoes look like they’ve had brown slime thrown at them , I’ll have to pull them out ..couple pumpkins are going to split , lemons too ,and the fruit tree branches are weeping low with apples touching the ground.

But thats all nothing really, we so needed this rain.

I’m glad we didn’t get that big hail here, although hubbys car copped it when he was at work. Dent’s everywhere. Same with 40 or so cars in their carpark.

Winter is close, temps will drop SOON.

Mid 30s don’t bother me much, car and work are A/C.

The early mornings (it was 8C on the 6th) are a bit fierce on the bike. Winter you get days that Max at 8-12C and can get down to a Min of -6.

So I don’t mind the 35ish but a bit of rain with it would be nice..

Cool :)

I’ll plant my garlic on the 20th of march. For some reason long forgotten by me, it’s on my calendar to do this every year on this particular date.

How can that only be 4.7mm? Up here that would be an inch at least.

I’ve enjoyed today.

Raining , more like drizzling all day. We have the a/c on low for the elf…even though the temp is about 22 …..very sticky and humid.

I’ve been sewing and the almost bimbo’s have been over this arvo. We have their car for 2 days as our’s need to be registered. So we can do the shopping on payday and the elf can have an ultra sound tomorrow and the dentist as well. Then it’s shanks pony until the next pay in April.
