My Hobart brother told me this morning of a (sort of) friend of his (whom he labelled Idiot). Came to Hobart from Melbourne, but decided to wing it instead of getting a test done before flying. Was stopped at the airport. Had to stay at his Mum’s until negative result. My SiL had driven to the airport to pick him up. Wasted trip. Very annoyed SiL. She refused to change her other activities to make time to see him. In the end he had to go back to Melbourne without seeing my brother. My brother doesn’t care.

Sacrifice The Best To Pretend The Economy Must Grow
Make Sure Your Healthcare Workers Suffer While You Go Out Partying
Queensland frontline health workers are going beyond public health directions to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19’s highly transmissible Omicron variant, as personal responsibility becomes the new mantra of the pandemic.
Emergency physician Kim Hansen said she would have liked to have taken her family to a Christmas concert this week, but they were now avoiding large gatherings. And when they go on holidays in January, they plan on driving to a non-metropolitan area where they can enjoy the outdoors and avoid crowds. “We’re planning hikes, picnics, swims, things like that,” said Dr Hansen, the Queensland chair of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. Instead of dining out in restaurants during the holiday season, they will get takeaway instead.
Infectious disease specialist Paul Griffin said he made sure his parents, who live interstate, received their COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, before they travelled to Queensland for Christmas. When his family gathers with friends, they also meet outdoors if they can, as part of a proactive approach to the pandemic. “I had a catch-up with friends yesterday, we made sure we sat outside for that, the most ventilated part of the venue, and as far away from anyone else as practically possible,” said Dr Griffin, the director of infectious diseases at Mater Health Services.
Dr Griffin’s mask wearing goes beyond the mandate. Outside his own household, he dons a mask whenever he’s indoors. He said a recent function with work colleagues was cancelled over worries they may all have to go into quarantine at the same time if they came into close contact with someone infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. “We thought that if we were all exposed simultaneously, it would have a big impact on what’s happening, so we elected to cancel,” Dr Griffin said.
“There’s been infected staff members that have resulted in lots of quarantined health care workers,” Dr Griffin said. “That’s put a huge burden on healthcare. Workload will go up. We’re seeing that already.”
But there are some errors, like this idea that “should” when “will”.
Griffith University senior lecturer in infection prevention and control Peta-Anne Zimmerman said she was wearing masks more than what was required. “It was my son’s birthday on the weekend and we went to see a Brisbane Bullets’ Game. I was wearing a mask the whole way through,” she said. “My husband also wore a mask. There were a lot of people that weren’t. “If you can’t maintain physical distancing, wear a mask. That should reduce the risk of transmission, even if you are in a crowded place.”
And more significantly, this idea that vaccines are the first line of defence, given that any half-witted high school SCIENCE graduate would know that the adaptive immune system is the third line of defence. Quarantine and distancing are Zero Line, barrier first line, et cetera.
University of Queensland virologist Ian Mackay said all attendees at his home on Christmas Day would be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, except some of the children aged 11 years and younger who were too young to get the jab. “We’re making sure that our group, our close friends and our relatives … are as vaccinated as they possibly can be,” he said. “That’s a really good thing to have as our first line of defence.”
Here’s the admission that actually it’s distancing and barriers first.
Dr Mackay said Christmas lunch would also be held outside. “Our house will be opened up, our windows will be open, to try and defeat any aerosols that might still be present from someone who could be infected, even if they are fully vaccinated, which we know can happen. We just know they won’t get as sick.”
Oh and the worst, the politicians, can go and fuck off.

Who is at greater risk of severe illness from COVID?
they also say
Dr Duncan-Smith said Omicron, which spreads three times faster than Delta, meant health measures were more important than ever. “It is very important that people do remember the social controls, such as personal hygiene, washing hands, sneezing into your elbow, mask-wearing when it’s mandated … and also checking in,” he said. “It’s really the whole of society that needs to help the medically vulnerable group by trying to control the spread through society. “The best way to protect you and your loved ones against getting COVID or severe COVID is getting vaccinated and make sure that if your boosters do that, you go and get it.”
maybe actually the best way to protect you and your loved ones is to fucking deelect the useless psychopaths in power

COVID-19 is known to cause multi-organ dysfunction1-3 in acute infection, with prolonged symptoms experienced by some patients, termed Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC)4-5. However, the burden of infection outside the respiratory tract and time to viral clearance is not well characterized, particularly in the brain3,6-14. We performed complete autopsies on 44 patients with COVID-19 to map and quantify SARS-CoV-2 distribution, replication, and cell-type specificity across the human body, including brain, from acute infection through over seven months following symptom onset. We show that SARS-CoV-2 is widely distributed, even among patients who died with asymptomatic to mild COVID-19, and that virus replication is present in multiple extrapulmonary tissues early in infection. Further, we detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA in multiple anatomic sites, including regions throughout the brain, for up to 230 days following symptom onset. Despite extensive distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in the body, we observed a paucity of inflammation or direct viral cytopathology outside of the lungs. Our data prove that SARS-CoV-2 causes systemic infection and can persist in the body for months.

Australia’s peak doctors body has criticised an “unethical” proposal to charge unvaccinated people for their medical care that is being considered by the New South Wales government. The state’s health minister, Brad Hazzard, confirmed the government was looking at forcing people who had not received the jab to pay for their medical bills if they required hospital treatment for Covid.
The idea represents a radical departure from Australia’s system of universal healthcare and has attracted fierce criticism. The Australian Medical Association president, Dr Omar Khorshid, labelled the proposal “unethical”. “The big issue from a medical point of view is that it’s really not ethical or the right thing to do to limit access to healthcare based on people’s previous health choices,” he told Guardian Australia.
and now for the kickers
In November, former NSW premier Bob Carr called for Australia to follow Singapore’s example after its government announced it would start charging people who were “unvaccinated by choice” for their medical bills.
At the time, Scott Morrison said it was a “heavy-handed approach” that he did not support.

History will show us in the end. They did one thing, NZ did (almost) the opposite. I’ve been interested from the start, because it was an experiment in real time. It’s just taking quite a long time to finish it. Sweden’s vaccination rate is enough doses given for 84% of the population to be double dosed. (https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/sweden/). On top of that, you would expect a good proportion of the young/school age people to have some natural immunity from having caught the bug, probably asymptomatically, during 2020 when they didn’t close their schools. This probably applies to some not insignificant proportion of the 18-60 year olds too. I find the whole thing interesting.

In all seriousness, I think Tasmania has made a mistake. Let’s keep that drawbridge up for another month or two, see what happens.
South Australia has recorded 484 new cases of COVID-19, with seven hospitalisations.
There are 286 more cases than the 198 recorded on Wednesday — the biggest single-day surge in cases in SA since the start of the pandemic.

Australians should not fear the explosion in COVID-19 case numbers, says the federal Health Minister Greg Hunt, as the number of people admitted to hospital with serious illness has not yet grown. “Now these things can change, there can be a lag, so I don’t want to make false promises on this. “But very, very heartening.”
Don’t worry by the time the cases become unwell it’ll be deep into holiday session and everyone will be too distracted to pay attention.

but ultimately you do have to wonder, probably less relevant for WA than for the east, if for example you’re aiming to have a big do safely from 2021-12-25 to 2022-01-01, why would you throw everything open for 5 to 10 weeks leading up to it, to maximise the chances of something fucking up and turning your party into a disaster¿
Like, why not try to crush the problem, keep a lid on things, until just before the party you’re aiming for, so that when you Let It Rip for a couple of weeks, it doesn’t tear everything to shreds¿
For WA it’s not as clear what to do with such a forward strategy starting from 0. You’d probably try to institute a hard lockout for about 1 month leading up to the event, with 1 month corresponding to the length of time it seems to take to crush an outbreak.

Mr Perrottet also said the government was looking to roll out a program to distribute free rapid antigen tests as part of a plan to move away from PCR tests. He said the health and finance ministers had been tasked to devise a model similar to the one used in the UK, which he hoped would begin in early 2022.
Oh really¿ How’s that going for them over in those other islands then¿
The Premier said advice had suggested the Omicron variant of COVID-19 was “five times less severe” than Delta, but the rules would help take pressure off the health system. Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said it was estimated 80 per cent of the state’s cases were the Omicron strain, which explained the steep rise in infections. She said data from South Africa indicated Omicron caused milder disease, and those who contracted it were 60 to 80 per cent less likely to be hospitalised compared to Delta.

“As we have always said, we will tailor our settings accordingly and at the moment we believe the settings we have made today will ensure that we have a strong summer, people remain safe,” he said.

We have been in community Covid zero for months, which seems to have been working well enough. So not much point in a lockdown as a precautionary measure. The precautionary measure is in not opening the borders too soon, or shutting them too late. This recent case slipped in on the last day before the border with QLD slammed shut again. Too late.

“People catching Omicron are 50% to 70% less likely to need hospital care compared with previous variants, a major analysis says.
The UK Health Security Agency says its early findings are “encouraging” but the variant could still lead to large numbers of people in hospital.
The health secretary said it was “too early” to determine “next steps”.
The study also shows the jab’s ability to stop people catching Omicron starts to wane 10 weeks after a booster dose.
Protection against severe disease is likely to be far more robust.
The report comes hot on the heels of data from South Africa, Denmark, England and Scotland which all pointed to reduced severity.”

read that
the deoptimization of prophylactic behaviors across the country to limit incidence and spread of covid is arguably intentional, previously people across the country (largely courtesy State government efforts) were more doing what is required of a hospital setting, saving the problem ending up in hospitals, but that’s been largely undermined by a policy to get endemic covid over the line so there can’t ever be any going back
the reality is some with influence fear low amounts of circulating covid more than they do any high level
and contrary to the noises of the PM, a State premier, and quite a few others, the personal responsibility tends to be diluted and diminishes when the numbers get high enough, they know this

There might be a very few who, for one reason or another, can’t obtain or be given the vaccination around the country, so we can’t write all of them off as stupid posers/lazy arseholes.
But, i reckon we could write off very, very nearly all of them as being in those categories.
