The local dryland farmers want to harvest their sorghum, but things like fog and cloud cover and moisture-bearing winds are slowing them down…some of them are drying their sorghum (lowering the moisture content) on-farm, just to get it onto the market…

Thanks Pomolo…we haven’t attended a party (outside the family) for years…like about 15 years…this is a neighbour, Sonny Joe was courting one of the girls, and altho’ she froze him out after 6 weeks, her family likes him…plus their place of work is down behind our office…she is 15 and he is 16….it was a lot of fun while it lasted…we ran their horses in our front paddock during the wet, to keep the grass down…I’m amazed MrD has shown any interest but it will do him good…I keep telling him to get a social life, take up golf, anything but he is “too busy, too tired” and would rather ride his bike or go to the gym…I think his hearing loss has a big bearing on this…

We have had exactly 2 inches. It’s still grey outside but I think it’s starting to clear up. Beautiful rain that wasn’t so heavy that it washed straight down the hill. Some would have soaked into the soil.

I think its a design thing. GF and I were staring at all the blossom the other day, saying now the wind will come to blow most of it off. I think Mangos know about the wind happening just before the wet season, so by design they load up with blossom, hopefully the wind will come and disperse the pollen and the rest of the wind will cull the crop so that only the best survive.

It is fantastic for August! Considering we had 95mms earlier in the month, this makes this August quite damp. August ave rainfall for Towntown is 15.8mm so this is a wet dry month.

Amazing for a place right beside the sea, how dry TownTown can get…

Its the lack of mountains behind us. We don’t have a range like Mackay, Tully or Cairns have on our backdoor.

Not even Harvey’s or Mingela Range will have that effect? Too far inland? It’s b***y dry in there, too…well Mingela Range is dry…

because we are on that spit that means we face North, the SEerlys that bring the moisture get funnelled around by Mt Elliott and Hervey’s Range, so that whatever rain doesn’t fall on Alligator Creek and Cungulla way, it gets shoved Northward and falls on Rollingstone. Mingela is too far away and not tall enough, even Charlies Trousers misses out.

We need a Bellenden Ker size rock to slow the moist airflow down…

Still better than summer.

I spent my morning after scraping the ice off my windscreen, trimming grading counting and tying thousands of fruit trees into bundles and then burying them again. Brought three home as they were too big so I’ll probably spend the rest of the day digging holes big enough to put them in.

Well, not the whole gamut because some fruit trees are evegreen and others wouldn’t be doing so well in the frost.

apples pears plums apricot prune nashi peaches nectarines almonds hazelnuts chestnuts pomegranute fig walnut pecan persimmon type fruit trees.

Drive past and pick one up off the heap of throw aways. When it gets bigger than a couple of trucks, we burn it. Which often happens at least twice each winter. If you buy one of the aboove from bunnings woolworths or a garden centre etc, then it probably still has my fingerprints on it.

Back to the weather. It’s warmer here. Thank goodness. I’ve actually walked down the back and picked some mandies, oranges, lemonades and navels. It’s squishy underfoot but the sun is trying to help the situation. It’s very weak but the day isn’t over yet.

Ah, well there were three monster Fantasia nectarines that were huge. they could have been sold with the market stuff or indeed we could start a line of huge trees but they would be prohibitive in cost due to the transport nightmare.
I thought OK I can plant these and multigraft them thus allowing me to reorganise my fruit orchard without losing too much fruiting time.

Well, I’ll only need a branch or two of fantasia nectarines, not three full trees. So yes, I’ll graft the goldmine, early rivers and flavour top nectarines on one tree, make another into various white peaches, the third well it will have yellow peaches. This way I can have all the old classic varieties which are all good eating. I’ve tried all the newer varieties and have found them wanting.
Grafting is something very handy for all gardeners to know.
I’ll try to remember to take more photos of various grafting techniques and put them online. I do have a small flickr set of them, needs more photos though. However there are plenty of online tutorials.

balmy day outside – north of adelaide – today.
i worked in the garden all day.
it’s raining now though.
good timing – rain at night – the correct time to rain.
