I try to but can never remember what my word is, so just come up with another one trying to use the letters S T R N and a vowel or two.

There was a discussion about this a few days ago.. ifls had a story, about the best start words to use. I like to try to incorporate the ones with three vowels and common consonants. Like aisle. But that’s not always the best strategy.

To really work out the optimum, you’d have to know what word list was in use. Scrabble used to use SOWPODS but recently expurgated a number of inappropriate words.
Apparently the actual list of words that are the answers has already been hard-wired, and Wardle’s girlfriend edited the list, so you’d probably also need a psychological profile on Wardle’s girlfriend.

Do it every day with a random word for a few billion years, and keep track of your results.

I like choosing a different first word each time.

I did yesterday’s in only two – the first gave me enough clues but I was struggling to make them all fit when I remembered the word I’d seen in here. (“Moist”) so while I did it in two guesses, I’m classifying it as “Assisted”.

The game code simply checks to see if the current date that you are playing is at least one day greater than the last time you played (or greater than 19/5/2021 if you have not yet played.)

The game code contains a word list and so can be played without a network connection.

To really work out the optimum, you’d have to know what word list was in use. Scrabble used to use SOWPODS but recently expurgated a number of inappropriate words.
Apparently the actual list of words that are the answers has already been hard-wired, and Wardle’s girlfriend edited the list, so you’d probably also need a psychological profile on Wardle’s girlfriend.

Here is the Wordle word list that is contained within the game code. It is too big to paste in here (12972 words)… https://cobberwebs.com/wordle.html

That is the same length as the sowpods list of 5 letter words so I assume that is the same list.

I’m sorry it upsets Boris but I like this thread. I like to see how other people approached it and how it worked out for them. I have no problems myself avoiding the thread until I have played. Possibly because I play pretty much as soon as the game resets. I get no joy from the posts some do that just show blocks of different colours. It might demonstrate the number of moves but it is the words that interest me.

I wasn’t even sure if double letters was allowed until I tried it.

I got the T in the right place on go one, but for some reason read it as being in the wrong place.

Much comedy ensued.

That was hard. In the end I had to resort to statistical brute force and go through the remaining letters and see if I could make a sensible word. It was the only word that fit the letters. Took several minutes of brute force goes. Not really feeling very clever for solving it that way.

I’ve narrowed it right down but I think I’ve used every word I know in the vicinity so I think I’m not going to get it.
