Irish fisherman on pushing back against Russian war games

The Russian military, which had announced naval drills off the coast of Ireland, agreed to move them further away after fishermen vowed to disrupt them. CNN’s Pamela Brown speaks to Patrick Murphy of the Irish South & West Fish Producers Organization, who was actively involved in the process.

I’m thinking that Russia can’t afford the claim for damaged nets etc. that might arise from the situation.

Dunno if there’s still such a thing, but there used to be the ‘Fishing Vessels Log’, in which was recorded every sighting of a fishing vessel, with a series of careful compass bearings noted, distances, speeds, time, sea state, wind and i don’t know what all.

The sole purpose of this was so that when a fisherman lodged a claim that the warship had damaged his nets, floats etc., the book could be produced as evidence that he was talking through his hat.

You’d think that the Russians would counter that with their own fishing* boat fleet.

t’was more than just the nets
Mr Murphy explained that it was also the timing
that if they miss the advent of prawn fishing many captains
wouldn’t make their quota and would thus be in danger of losing
their boat and indeed multiple generations invested in family businesses

…plus the proposed firing of live ordinance in detrimental to the young prawns

…plus there’s scuttlebutt that the Ruskies may very well may have been responsible
for the disruption of deep sea cables used for communication off the coast of Norway

Norwegian Undersea Surveillance Network Had Its Cables Mysteriously Cut

…and their “War Games” was due to take place over Ireland’s undersea cable

just saying: If it walks like a duck…

When I was on St Helena a Russian “trawler” called in. I have never seen so many aerials on one ship.
It was quite amusing. The Russians came ashore, cameras in hand while the Brit security went to the anchorage, also with cameras in hand. Talk about Spy v Spy.

I’d like to do a tour of Atlantic islands, they all have a rich history.
