hopefully you do better than us but damn that was an interesting journey

have to say after the past few days we are locking in our objection to the way their author describes it as “similarity”, videre licet

By “semantically similar”, I mean, roughly “used in the context of similar words, in a database of news articles.”

yeah well some of them were spamming of the derivative-words style, and others just bored drifting, but there were some seemingly disconnected close hits there

as we said, we are locking in our objection to the way their author describes it as “similarity”, videre licet

By “semantically similar”, I mean, roughly “used in the context of similar words, in a database of news articles.”

and probably “association” or “closeness” would be less misleading but hey we didn’t write it so they get to call it whatever they like

we’ll probably give up on the next few and write a different -le for your entertainments

I might code up a rival game. Firstly, regard various parts of speech of a single word to be equivalent. Secondly, rate the similarity by simple average distance in a synonymity network.

Laugh Out Loud well today’s was a bit silly but here…

I’m done with semantle for real this time, yesterday was just ridiculous. With a target word “seek”, the really hot words included “provide”, “give”, “obtain”, “bring”, but not “look”, “search”. “Sought” was as cold as a Tauntaun’s balls.

I got it in 110 today. That’s a fail.

I was going to leave semantle alone but during some boredom tonight I stuck some words in.

I got lots and lot of cold words until suddenly at word 30 I went green with ‘sport’ 782/1000

I tried lots and lots of different sporting related words and they all scored badly.

My 98th guess was ‘country’ for 998. So I tried countries and nations and national and such.

My 106th guess was ‘world’. Bingo. ( ‘International’ scored 980/1000..so shrug…I still don’t understand.)

This game can be very frustrating. Yesterday it took me 240 tries, but I only found it after abandoning the ‘clues’ and trying random words again.

Today’s was much better at 41, but the words I considered closest were ranked 721 and 722.

I played it yesterday with Sarah. We got out in just over a hundred. Not that it made sense.

I suppose I am bored enough to play again today.

interesting, we’ve been inspired and ended up approaching another angle, but gave up anyway

as said before, the game concept has potential

if you find the other approach, and combine them, it might actually lead to the answer

give us a clue then.

The academic theme is on the right sort of track, but it’s not an “ologist”.

I typed dedication and then started singing in my brain ‘the dedication, the devotion, of turning all the night times into the day.’ And I typed it in and it worked.

I did used to play a game with the kids when they were little where you take turns changing one letter in a word until you can’t any more (repeats not allowed). Like a road trip game. I wonder whether I could implement and publish that.

The game needs to be shorter and smarter to make DV happier.

I started to get close yesterday when I went from the word hedge to the word boundary. And then words like fence and border got me nowhere so I went for cricket and zoomed up the list. then I went bowler, batsman and bat and I had it.

I thought it was weird how it was about cricket.

In a surpising semantling I spent some time getting into the green band and did so at 865/1000. I changed the tense of that word and found the answer. That was somewhat flukey.

You found it in 38!

I think sometimes one and sometimes the other.

The other day when I solved in 19 I started with field. And it was a good opening score. And so I picked paddock and it was low. And so I picked fence and it went up. And then I picked boundary and it went up lots. And then I had some words that rated badly. Ground rated well. Oval did too. Tried cricket and zoomed up list. Then bowler and batsman were really reall close and the answer was bat.

Whatever the system is, it does generally appear to focus on one particular meaning, both for the target word and for guesses.

and the “next nearest word” hint is fairly next nearest to useless, with plurality generally conferring “similarity” (though as we’ve suggested, “relatedness” or “association” or “closeness” is probably more appropriate) of around 70 arbitrary units

the better target words we find have chains of approach that include distinct polysemisms in approximately equal proportion

24 _ 29.41 267/1000

then ages more to get in again

57 _ 32.06 598/1000

I like my theory of starting with common verbs.
However the ‘make’ here is a different meaning to the one I expected.

I started with..

1 use 22.50 (cold)

The writing route took me nowhere, and at 114 I randomly typed a seafaring word, then got it in 129.

My average is now 100.52, up from yesterday’s 99.50.

I am up to guess 114.

I got to 990/1000 at guess 69 and have made no progress since then.

And it is worse than normal because all the words are violent words. Just a long list of awful words.

I also think that that news this morning about the amount of men on tiktok verbalising their imaginative ways of killing women…well…it’s still fucking with my brain. How come you can’t show breastfeeding women but you can allow that?

I hope tomorrow’s word is kinder.

funnily enough that’s exactly the number of guesses we took

we agree that violence in media is problematic

indeed we do wonder about the source material this game is based on because the other less violent meanings of the polyseme barely even feature in top 1000

Yes, we eventually got there, after a penultimate guess that gave us the correct angle.

We acknowledge that the word is used in quite general contexts, though dictionary does say “especially” for a specific context. We probably associate it more with that context than their source data.

In all honesty we always thought that the word was specific to that context, and all the other uses were actually metaphorical(!).

My leap to the finish was from ‘oversee’ -that was 295/1000…after working out it had nothing to with employment.

Yes but I meant do you use google to search for a word that’s close to the word or just use your brain to work it out

Thus, if two words have 0 cosine similarity, they are completely orthogonal, meaning they have two different “meanings” and are completely unrelated. Whereas a negative similarity means the two words are related in component, but in an opposite (or negative) fashion

Yeah… not convinced by that, we don’t think their interpretation is sound just looking at their closest words lists.

no. I have been working on the redactle…which I am enjoying today. It’s close to being up my street.

I was speaking from experience. Too often I have come in high and then spent ages filling out the minor words.

I only learned about the game today. It was mentioned on a wireless program I was listening to – and played my first a few hours ago.

Got it in 45. I don’t know if that’s a good or poor score.

(I just had a thought! 45 eh? That sounds like a record! Not bad for someone who used to work in radio!)

I’ll see myself out …. )

that said we would have thought our 112 was closer but you know how all they twist words like that

bizarrely we started with this

5 paradox 23.55 (cold)

then didn’t get any closer until tried a previous answer which gave us 23.68

and any closer ones were after 112

Hint: paradox really didn’t help either, we agree.

wowsers!

so anyway that didn’t quite take another 100 but damn some of those top 1000 were not as good as others we could have come up with

turns out that first pick was actually most helpful, ended up pulled by a few green herrings

Do you look up words that are similar or guess

Do you look up words that are similar or guess

we try to guess almost entirely

if we’re sure it’s a synonym but we’re completely stuck otherwise then we go glossary but might have done that twice only

usually we’d give up instead of looking up general search or encyclopaedia for related words, given up heaps, searched again maybe twice

of the times we give up, most actually pay off in the sense that we wouldn’t have hit the target anyway

It was pencil not paper. It was fork and spoon but not plate. Hammer not nail. I do not know why it was saucer and not cup.

Let’s say for example that the answer is chess. And that the word scoring 923/1000 was …dice. And other close words included Katana and epee and joust and sandpit.

But the words board, pieces and move were all colder than tv.

we’d wondered for a while (could have checked easily enough though) what would happen if a common generic word were targeted

guess we found out

today … much simpler

yeah it’s our own fault because we just go off on tangents of rhyme and clang associations

but still took us 14 just to get to green with “read” bd “write” which weren’t very helpful as you might gather from knowing the target

Just did a run of 58 correct words. But then I blew it. And I was being so careful.

104 goes

95.19% accuracy.

It was easier than I thought in the end.

yeah the closest we got was microphone and then 200 later we gave up

today’s there is a somewhat more reasonable path to victory but the other more common meaning doesn’t seem to feature at all

side note we gave up on today’s

negative values not really, but then it’s not really clear what the “similarity” numbers mean anyway

should be related to their thing below

GoogleNews-vectors-negative300.bin from late 2021

first close took 21 for grief
then 54 life
then 109 brain and it was quick from there

that 997 though would not have been closest in our mind, we would have considered dialogue closer but it isn’t even top 1000, that said the root word is 979 and its negation is 992 so make of that what you will

(and 999 seems like a misspelling so we’re sure dv will have plenty of shade to cast)

you’d‘ve expected them to be closer but whatever
