What to do if your car’s been submerged in floodwater

With flood waters becoming the norm, how are electric vehicle manufacturers dealing with the problems of short circuiting and electrocution?

How many people disconnect the battery in petrol vehicles?

How many people disconnect the battery in EV’s.

You’re actually a lot safer in an EV compared to a regular car. The engineers that design & put them together know that since the battery pack is the lowest part of the car it’ll get submerged every now and then, so they make them to suit such conditions.
There’s been a number of Tesla’s gone for a swim in floods in the US and once cleaned out they often are okay. Short-term, they can actually be used as a crude boat as they float for a while and the tyres turning work as (very) crude propulsion devices.

Mostly in the low to mid 100’s I think. 400 volts is something I’ve seen for a few.

A 12V battery can be fully submerged without shorting.

ok,

I have seen some pics of cars on fire in floods.

Petrol car owners should disconnect the battery and take it out.

ok 100 to 400.

So it varies across the board.

I don’t know, but you should be able to find out fairly easily.

Quite interesting wikipedia article about “Wet Nellie”.

Wet Nellie is the submarine made to look like a Lotus Esprit S1 sports car for the James Bond film “The spy who loved me”.
It’s actually my favourite Bond Car.

The relevance to this thread is that, in 2013 Elon Musk bought Wet Nellie in order to install a Tesla Type electric drive and turn this Lotus look-alike into a working submarine.

Kingston in Tasmania (down the road from sm) has an Australia Day “A Day at the Beach” thing including a sand sculpture competition. (I don’t know if the sand sculpture still happens). My civil engineer brother was really into the sand sculpture for a while there and won a barbecue one year. However…one year he and his family did that car coming up out of the sand. I can’t find a picture, but it was pretty impressive. I’m a bit hazy on the details but I think they missed the judging that year because R didn’t allow enough time for the scope of the project…

(R is a really rusted on James Bond fan. Models, cinema posters, the lot)
