How does the brain make memories?

In a study led by Cedars-Sinai, researchers have discovered two types of brain cells that play a key role in dividing continuous human experience into distinct segments that can be recalled later. The discovery provides new promise as a path toward development of novel treatments for memory disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

man you have hit the nail on the head right here, we have been desperately hanging out for the day when instead of observing students carefully and interacting with them in ways to have them pay attention, we can just toss a cool little fMRI scanner into the classroom and have it tell us if they were

In an earlier thread
a few of us were discussing
the positive effects of allowing the
brain to create new neural pathways by
NOT Paying Attention (specifically looking
out of the classroom window during lectures)

The notion of stimulating retrievable memories by
enhancing them with novel experiences rather than
following along …reading text that’s being read aloud.

just sayin’ It’s never failed to work for me.

LOL. I use the triple input strategy to making permanent memories.
Three sensory inputs simultaneously.
eg. for maths it’s seeing + hearing + writing (proprioception)
But it can be any three senses.

I’m more concerned with how to make the brain forget what I don’t want to remember.
To clear room for new memories.

interesting discussion:

when you invent something which never existed previously…?
however, problem solving and conceptualizing would certainly benefit
from piecing together experiences in order to conceive something in your head…?

one may conceive of a flying machine
but it helps to understand principles such as aerodynamics… and perhaps Gravity
experiencing things through trial and error? (experimentation?)

imagine that is a rotating radar trace, combination passive and active, you’ll notice that for all but the most mindblind example the source of the radar (self) is in the scan field also, basic detection signatures are built into the wetware from the get-go, much of it doesn’t start as word-concepts, or persist as word concepts primarily, not necessarily
