Dave,

Is it an immersion heater, similar to an electric jug element? Thanks, Peter

No, not any sort of heater.

I meant to take and post a photo of the item from a different angle, as requested, but got sidetracked by other chores and forgot. I’ll do so this morning.

Sorry Natalie, not a keyholder or a restaurant ticket holder. But those are good, imaginative guesses that are on the right track as to the general purpose of the item.

Peter also had an imaginative guess that he relayed to me in a PM.

Regarding size, the two verticals are about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) apart and 7 inches (11.75 cm) high. They were inserted into a second part but I disassembled it and replaced that second part with a larger one.

Sorry that I didn’t get around to posting the requested shot from another angle; I had some other tasks and then forgot to take the photo. I’ll do that this morning my time.

I thought that this would be an easy one – that’s why I asked for any guesses that you are sure of to be via PM. But apparently it isn’t as easy as I expected, so don’t bother with PMs – just post your guesses here, as usual.

It is difficult to actually discern that. Which is why I asked for a shot from another angle. He still hasn’t come up with that yet.

It probably isn’t a filament in a common light bulb as the dimensions are way greater.
The connectivity between the rings doesn’t seem to actually be there. So It probably isn’t a filament.

They look like split rings. The sort you’d attach to a key (or vice versa).

Is it possible that it’s been photographed upside down and, in fact, is just a key holder of sorts, with the split rings neatened up for photographic purposes.?

Honestly, a piece of wire that has another piece of spiral-wound wire loosely dangling on top of it, so that it slop and slide around on the first piece of wire at the touch of a breeze?

I can’t imagine how that could possibly have any practical use.

I have doubts.

That loose spiral wouldn’t have much trouble rounding that bend under any kind of push or other force. It ‘d always annoyingly be in the ‘wrong’ place.

I reckon it would have to bend out of straight to go round the bend. I think it is big enough not to go far. And a whisk works better by have some movement in the parts, I think. But who knows.

I’ll wait a day to see if the second photo helps others ID the item.

But I’ll repeat that in one of her responses Natalie was sort of on the right track – she got the general function right, but not the specific details of what things this item is designed to be used for.

I have actually seen some weird and wonderful toasters. It is amazing, we had a competition once to see who out of us could make the best campfire toaster out of wire.

It is from a small forum which you’d have to become a member of to read.

I went and looked in the “peculiar kitchen implements” box in my pantry. Apparently I didn’t retrieve the odd utensil from my mother’s kitchen that is somewhat like that on one end. And I can’t find a photo online of anything like it. It was a hand utensil. And I think it was supposed to be for making your mashed potato really creamy, after you’d rough mashed it with a standard masher. I don’t think it worked any better than a fork or standard whisk really. I reckon it had a green or red wooden handle, so it was probably 1950s. I’ve got her one of these (for cutting crinkle potato or carrot etc) and I use it. It was similar, except it ran down to a spring across the bottom and wasn’t on an angle.

Look at the physical characteristics:

The “frame” is pretty fine wire, so is not meant to have much force/weight on it and if the coil is attached to the frame as mentioned, whatever force is applied to the unit needs to be “straight down” otherwise the coil would become detached.

It is zinc plated, so designed for outdoor use but not for being permanently in the weather.

It is not stainless, so is something that is meant for light use and made cheaply.

I’m guessing a picnic aid, either part of a clip to hold a tablecloth to a table or part of a napkin holder.

  • No scale.
  • Lower part not shown.

I’d say it’s upside down.

It’s a bird feeder that hangs from a bough by those two wires at the sides.

Birds stand on the midsection pecking at the food lodged in the coil.

Unlike most suggestions, it could easily fulfil this function.

It doesn’t require external energy (other than the minimal energy one expends when using it).

How do you use it? Very basic – you just secure the items this is designed for to it.

not sure about that

it’s one of those situations where you apply what it isn’t

and of all the things it isn’t, which is quite a list, I know that knowing what it is is not necessary to my survival, that my heart won’t stop beating as a consequence of not knowing what it is

as it goes most of the world, and entire universe is made up of things that I don’t know what they are, not any entirely bad situation really

I see bent wire perhaps and numerous loops hanging on it, I know it’s not an elephant, and that it’s not in the room i’m sitting

That’s not fair then. Have to have photos from at least two angles.

The irregularity suggests hand made. If I was making links for chain mail then it would look like that before sawing into individual loops.

Have to say I was a little disappointed with the reveal. Was hoping it would be something a little more interesting but here you go. It is a paintbrush holder.

…i.e., a paintbrush holder that’s clearly adapted from an old bird feeder.

Well I don’t know about anyone else here, but that was an impossible guess for me. I’ve never seen such a contrivance.

adapted.. but apparently legit if you google image paintbrush holder with coils, you see them all their glory.

(I had thought it was someone’s home made adaption, but it’s an actual product)

Today I learned. Obviously I don’t do much painting.

I do now recall seeing these before, a long time ago, but it’s not a product I ever considered necessary or desirable.

In my brush-painting days I was happy to just leave them lying on a plate when in use but temporarily exchanged, and in a jar when not in use.

(I still use brushes in limited capacity in my pastel paintings, but since this is dry work there’s even less reason to shove them in a bird feeder).

A jar containing the appropriate solvent.

actually looks like a pretty useful tool if you have few brushes.. it seems it’s a cleaner holder and drier all in one.. the hole plate goes inside the turps/water in the container to wipe the brush to clean off access paint, then you can hang them to dry. of course also useable while painting to hold different brushes.. it’s neat I guess

No, you clean them in solvent, then store them (brush side up) in a jar containing air :)

Seems vaguely nifty until it’s tipped over, sending turps everywhere.

I use a sealable tall jar & leave them in the solvent.

It does look to be easy to knock over.

Which could be why Dave put his on a heavier jar.

Not a good idea for art brushes, you want to let them dry after being cleaned.

Sadly I don’t do art. Mine are daggy house paint ones.

Still, paintbrushes of any kind should be cleaned and dried after each use.
