Anyone have any idea why my Sweet peas haven’t flowered this year?
I’ve done nothing different than other years.

when did you plant them? Aren’t you in south west Sinny?
We plant ours on the Ides of March up here (central queensland) but I know that last year Pepe sowed his about now and they flowered…so I’m confused … but hang in there…somebody else will know…
Hi Dinetta
Inner west Sinny, planted them in March as usual.

and they haven’t flowered yet!?
They like lime, like sugar snaps etc…or hardwood ash…might be talking through my fertilizer bucket here…at the worst, you may have planted dud seed…
my first sweet pea appeared on sept 19th last year.
none so far this year – but adelaide has been cold and wet.
i keep planting mine on the same west facing wall each year.
so hey? – add more sun – add more fert – or just wait.

Hi Pepe
Seems it’s not just me then…
We have had a really cold winter this year, not so much as cold I suppose but more ‘prolonged’, so will wait & see, trouble is once it warms up it gets TOO warm!
I have reason to remember (I was in hospital) just before the 2000 Olympics in Sydney & they were flowering profusely, I always remember the staff saying ‘this is the lady with the REAL flowers’, so in comparison it is very late this year.
Or climate change?? Just thought I’d throw that in.. could cause a debate?
Cheers
Come to think of it, we sowed our seeds at the Ides of March, and we had sweet peas for a local church flower show…first week in september, I think…and we would have frosts in the winter sometimes…this was in my home town, just up the road, but the days here get very warm…it’s rare for the earth to be cold for weeks ….if ever…

a debate on climate change under the heading of sweet peas ? – nothing odd about that around here LOL.
i suspect the flowering of s’peas is as random as flowering in practically every other plant. in fact randomness seems to be an essential ingredient in nature’s timing.
pepe’s seasonal vege planting guide – pop it in you might fluke it.

thanks RB but i haven’t summed up yet LOL.
i’m working on the western side of the shed (where the sweet peas are) now.
it’s an incredible tangle thanks to the raspberries. i have 40 good strawbs under the climbing, suckering, thieving useless raspberries. so i’m cutting my way thru the raspberry jungle and exposing the strawbs. these strawbs will have suckers which i should have transplanted back in july.
all in all its a lousy job that i’ve been delaying .
i’m hoping the wet weather and lack of sun (due to the jungle) would have delayed the strawb bio-rhythms to such an extent that they won’t notice i’m late. maybe?
the other trick of nature is seen in the disturbance of the ground around the new r.w.tank. where the bobcat bloke has dug, shifted and turned soil the grass growth is twice the size of the undisturbed ground.

The grass still grows greener along the sewerage trench at the back of my mother’s house, and that was laid in 1966…

i have removed the raspberry jungle.
it’s amazing how the mind strays when doing a tedious job.
…..i came up with a theory that the three independents were more indicative of the voting public because they don’t need polls to formulate policy.
has anyone here been ‘polled’?

I’d never get off the phone if I was polled lol!
