Wow, I’m impressed…congratulations on getting all that done in one day…didn’t know you pruned Hibiscus tho’?

Pretty normal I think.

I chop mine back every now and then, to stop it getting to a monstrous size. It’s living on borrowed time though.. it will go as part of the demolition process.

To prune or not to prune? Ain’t no question really… Hibiscus need a regular trim from time to time to help maintain shape and form, especially after flowering which tends to be twice a year, around now and then again around the end of summer are the two flowering moments. These prunings should be about 1/3rd of the growth removed, back to some healthy looking buds.

But as a general rule of thumb, every third year, you should go hard and really give a good prune, treat it like a rose, cut back to hardwood, maybe taking 3/4ers of the shrub away.

Also, you should prune as required which is often the best way. If the shrub is too big, prune. If a stick pokes you in the eye, prune. Prior to transplanting, prune. And the red flowers can be made into tea.

There’s a house down the street that has two hibiscus trimmed into lollypops. Looks good too.
