When I grow up, I want to be a ????

while walking through the delightful Queen’s Garden recently, I stopped to take a photo of a Datura flower, when a dear sweet elderly lady came up to inform me that the plant, the whole plant was deadly poisonous. I told her that a vibrant hallucinogenic tea could also be made from the petals….
the plain simple white.

the red

and the apricot.

That’s the Bauhinia from a distance. And that photo is heavily cropped, that tree is twice the size in the original shot. I saw it from a distance and thought “Blossom? Cherry, Almond?” and it was only upon closer inspection that I noticed it was Bauhinia!

Just gorgeous, thanks PM :)
I found my first skink in the garden for this season the other day – drowned in the dog’s sand pit :( (I thought it was sealed up over winter but no, stacks of rain got in)
Second one for the season not long after – poor blighter had already lost his tail, probably the dog’s fault.

passionflower.

Cerbera manghas

Gardenia

and of course, a waterlily

and now for some pink flowers starting off with this weird looking chap which stems from the trunk itself, the fruit afterwards looks just like a cluster fig but they don’t flower like this….

and of course, a waterlily

and pink flowers in the tropics means ginger

and torch gingers… this one for bubba.

tropical pink flowers also mean Heliconias. I messed around with the colour on this ever so slightly….

elementary dear pepe, you have indeed deduced correctly. I am in a mode akin to not working and enjoying it, the birds are still singing outside despite the sun’s absence and the bats are as raucous as a Southern Highland Meri on her month of betrothal. Tomorrow I shall depart for a few days of discovery and adventure, the plan is to cover my poor chariot in the mud and waters of lands far damper than these and with a photographic journey of wonderment, my batteries are on charge as we speak!

some time ago, I posted a photo of a Climbing Pandanus, Freycinetia excelsa and now I have spotted the fruit of one. So for Pomolo’s enjoyment and other lovers of fine Pandan, here ‘tis the Fruiting Climbing Pandanus.

went for a wander recently. Spotted this Lace Monitor, and he was okay with us getting very close. In fact this shot was taken while standing only a few feet away.

also spotted in the same park (normally this time of year, it is still dry and crisp and the park has normally been incinerated by locals, and is all burned and charred but as you can see in this shot, the grass has survived the dry season and is lush and long) and while not uncommon, these guys are not often seen.
A dingo.

But this is a find! And a first for me (in Australia)!
A Bennett’s Tree Kangaroo spotted at the Mt Hypipamee Crater.

we don’t get these guys this big in Towntown but up North on the mudflats of Cairns, lie the big Muddy Mudskippers!

Lovely pics PM :)
I saw one of those mudskippers whils in Cairns and what funny creatures they are!

When we were in Eumundi I got talking to a stall holder at the markets. He said the monitors have all but disappeared from Noosa N.P.
There used to be heaps of them. Now the Scrub Turkeys have really multiplied.
I wonder if cane toads are the reason? I would have thought they’d have been effected long before now, if they were going to.

Not sure Bubba, in Towntown, the Goannas are prevalent in the older suburbs whereas in the newer fringe suburbs, too much development has scared them off into the bush. The Goannas here love the coastal suburbs too. Cane Toads are everywhere so don’t know what hassles they contribute and the Brush Turkeys only bother those who live near the Ross River or at Pallarenda.

I’m not sure how old this one is, but most of her cacti which are in the same area she had when I was a kid…although from memory most of them were really spiky. This one’s a few spiky hairs, but the pink one doesn’t.

Thanks Roughy, despite the sunshining bright, I resorted to using the flash just to make sure everything was fast enough. It was a “landscape” orientated shot, but I cropped the sides in, which helped quite a bit.

It does look like that… there are only a handful of bees in Australia that “buzz pollinate” and when you are as close to the action as I was yesterday (to take this shot) it was quite an eye opener to see their “tongue” and their “buzz pollination” at work!!!
