I know of all of these songs, but none are any particular favourite of mine.

I see, forget hundreds of years of fine classical music, or the rich musical traditions of the rest of the Earth’s cultures – the “greatest songs of all time” come from the last few decades of shitty Western pop music.
From Ian
It’s only rock n roll but I like it :)
Frpm: Party-Pants
Sampling bias. The poll was conducted by Rolling Stone magazine, the readership of which is confined largely to people who prefer the Western pop/rock genre.
From: Buibblecar
Fair enough, each to their own.
But even within the category of “shitty Western pop music”, I would rate anything by ABBA higher than anything by Bobby Dylan or the Beatles.
And ABBA were crap :)

No. Elton John, as an example, has never written a lyric in his life; that doesn’t detract from his music.

Keef still rollin.. something to be said for 25 years of hard drugs
Does raise the question, what is the oldest lyric used in a successful song?
I suspect Seeger’s Turn, Turn, Turn is probably up there.

only us famous ones.
If we are limiting this to songs written in the last 100 years with a maximum length of say 5 minutes, I think I’d go for:
Red Hair – The Incredible String Band

What?
You aren’t supposed to have preferences after age 5?
No-one told me.
How are you defining “song”? Would an a capella choral piece qualify, or must there be instrumental music accompanying it?
Given that the music I (and probably everyone else) want to listen to depends on my mood, can I opt for several different “songs”, or does it need to be a single song?

I’ve already chosen that, you’ll have to pick something else.
I think my list is based upon music I was listening to at certain times of my life, that hold good memories for me. I don’t think it would be based upon the artistic quality (or otherwise) of the music.

I love the whole movement :)
I’d also choose “A Day in the Life” from Sgt Pepper :)
I dunno… this would take forever. It would be difficult to narrow it down to 500 even.
Some that come to mind (not considering classical pieces)
Take Me To Church – Hozier
One of a Kind – Spy vs Spy
Sweetest Thing – Lauryn Hill
Eskimo Joe – From the Sea
Runnin’ – The Pharcyde
Flame Trees – Cold Chisel
Hearts a mess – Gotye
Roses – Outkast
Well to be even more pedantic, one presumes you mean recordings, as opposed to songs…or do you all like your nominated songs regardless of who’s performing them?

likely to play Pachabel’s canon. there is about a dozen versions around that range from pretty simple to outside my ability. My favourite version is a duet with flute but Kaye had a heart attack and so that’s never going to sing again.

It all depends on your mood, not that I’m a moody type of bloke but I could pick one tonight and tomorrow I’d pick another one.

Something’s change. Some stay the same. The Pretenders.
Those of us who were fortunate enough to have our musical formative years in the sixties and seventies were indeed lucky. Later in life, In My Life I came to appreciate some of the classical music.
It’s a journey.

I started out with a box of classical music on 78s. I was into Beethoven’s piano concertos at an early age.
But my sister was ten years older than me. In 64 I was 6 and she was 16. We shared a room. I was immersed.
My father was the Australian Drum Major of the year many times. That was part of musical upbringing too.

These songs actually charted in the 60s and 70s:
-‐-‐——-
It’s not the way that you do it
But how you do it to me
It’s not the way that I want it
But how you want it to be
They say that one and one make two-oo
But you and me, we know it’s three
They say that we won’t be happy
I wish they’d get off our tree
Ooh-na-na, Ooh-na-na-hi-ya
Ooh-na-na-hi-ya-hi-ya
Ooh-na-na, Ooh-na-na-hi-ya
Ooh-na-na-hi-ya-hi-ya
You’re my honey bee, my apple pie-hie-ie
You’re my honey, I belong in your eye
Ooh-ooh, la-la-la-la-lah
Ooh-ooh, la-la-la-la-lah
———
Love, love me do
You know I love you
I’ll always be true
So please
Love me do
Whoa, love me do
Love, love me do
You know I love you
I’ll always be true
So please
Love me do
Whoa, love me do
Someone to love, somebody new
Someone to love, someone like you
Love, love me do
You know I love you
I’ll always be true
So please
Love me do
Whoa, love me do
Love, love me do
You know I love you
I’ll always be true
So please
Love me do
Whoa, love me do
Yeah, love me do
Whoa-oh, love me do

But I’m a fair man so I can certainly name a few tracks from the 70s that would be in that top 500.
Cool for Cats by Squeeze
Oliver’s Army by Elvis Costello
Forever Autumn by Moody Blues

Comfortably Numb scrapes into the 70s…
I don’t have a singular favorite song, but of the sort of music I like most, it would be like these below. I don’t necessarily think they’re great songs, or great music, it’s more that I reliably enjoy them, have done over time, come back to them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiHmeHZAc0s
JT Coldfire – She’s Crazy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5NPriAa8so
Albert Cummings – Lonely Bed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71Gt46aX9Z4
Gary B.B. Coleman – The Sky is Crying
Apparently Witty wants us to name 10 favourite songs.. it was his idea, note…
Ok, that 2010 list was pretty close for mine..
Except for 2. Change to Can’t Always Get What You Want
8. Change to A Day in the Life
Delete 4, 5, 7,9 and 10
Need some Eagles.. Take It to the Limit
Led Zep.. Rock and Roll
Chisel.. Flame Trees
Pink Floyd.. Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Moody Blues.. I’m Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band
Hunters and Collectors.. Throw Your Arms Around Me

In date order, here are some you may not have thought of:
Flanders and Swan (1957) A transport of delight
Carole King (1971) Tapestry
Sky (1980), Dance of the Little fairies
Mrs mollwollfumble (2000) E minor blues

No, the quality is inversly proportional to the number of views.
So the best song on Youtube has never been watched by anybody.
And since it seems we need multiple choices:
Joni Mitchell: Could be both sides now (or almost anything else) but I’m going for Big Yellow Taxi
Sandy Denny: Who Knows Where the Time Goes?
Anne Briggs: Go Your Way
Pentangle (and also Anne Briggs): Sweet Child
Richard Thompson: Never Any Good
Cream: Spoonful is too long so White Room and/or I Feel Free
