Almost 2,000 times more particle pollution is produced by tyre wear than is pumped out of the exhausts of modern cars, tests have shown.

It’s much much better now. I’ve heard that that’s mostly because they’ve now found the sweet spot temperature in diesel engines that is too high for particle emission and too low for Nox emission.

Anecdote:

Back 30 years ago, I was the senior technician for a large video arcade on George St, Sydney. One day when all the machines were behaving and I had nothing to do, I took it upon myself to clean the screens of the video games and was surprised by the amount of crap that was electrostatically stuck to the CRTs after years of neglect.

The surprising thing was not that the machines closest to the front door were the dirtiest, but that what I had initially assumed to be soot looked more like rubber.

Okay got an answer -For the diesel Pajero’s at least, they were fitted with DPF’s from 2006 – 2008, then dropped, then fitted again from 2016 onwards.
I know that with mine, when driving at night I can clearly see diesel soot coming out the exhaust. Every now and then I give it a boot full, running it to redline a couple of times and the exhaust is much cleaner after that for a month or so.

a reason it could have been dropped for a while was due to fire risks in long grass. It seems to have happened a few times. Maybe they redesigned where it is located to a safer spot.

You can report smoking vehicles online. Whenever I’m sat directly behind some beast churning out black smoke I have to breath I report them. Nissan patrols are normally my biggest customer.

Its been mentioned that EVs produce more tyre dust because they are heavier. Though to be fair EVs can use the motor like a brake to brake more evenly/ accelerate in a way to reduce dust ( if they wanted to)
