Thank goodness for a sun shining on my place and temps just that bit higher…..Things are moving in my garden at last and its wonderful to feel the sun on my back when I’m outside.

Photobucket

We have had some amazing rain here and the back lawn/yard gave up trying to soak it all away. I was even standing in water, when hanging out the washing. Lost the newly germinated carrots as the water was everywhere.

Photobucket

This morning I mucked out their shed and took 4.5 wheel barrows of yuck out and popped a pile of new straw back in. Feel very happy with the gang/girls having dryer areas to stand and run around on. Plus now fresh bedding.

Egg collection has gone up too each day and its a basket collection now as sometimes its 4 duck and 2 to 4 chook eggs to carry.

Jimbob just left and sitting in our shed is a brand new lawn mower.

He half mowed the lawn, so he got to use it first…lol

Then I took over and finished the job.

Poor elf doesn’t have the lungs to even push a mower today…… so he’ll have to wait.

Jimbob said the mower murders can use it too, seeing as he was using theirs to get his lawns mowed for about 8 months……….

yes i have the other asparagus. don’t feel too sorry for poor L1 tho’ – there’s plenty fresh shoots coming thru’ in her garden. i’m going to eat the asparagus tonight – when i find a recipe.

lucky and elf are behind schedule in their garden thanks to cold rain. same as me and all other sozzies. none the less the broccoli head they picked is twice the normal size. …. and we are still in time for spring plantings.

the dunbar cake (?) was great with elf’s coffee. both lucky and i are producing savoury cakes – i halve the sugar in my nutties and she produces a smooth but unsweet cake.

great to visit again L1 and ‘the stig – er – elf”.

Asparagus is good stirfried with oyster sauce, chillie, lots of white pepper, a dash of fish sauce and some sugar… not too much.

Now this area has dried up some I have taken the netting away. where the carrots drowned, I have 2 endive seedlings and 1/2 doz mixed loose lettuces planted out and some radish seedlings. Seedlings were transplanted out in worm castings:D

Buddy had his first taste of Rainbow Chard leaves for breakfast.

Then the seedlings/seeds/plants were either watered with Pepe’s pigeon poo Champagne or seasol.

Tomorrow I have another area set aside for some R & R for me.

I’m way behind on the LHC – just wanted to say how lovely your photos are, Lucky :)

Your maggies look a little different to ours – I’ve never seen a maggie with such a grey back! Over here the ladies have sort of.. interspersed black and white, so it looks grey, but the feathers themselves aren’t that lovely light grey colour of your Mrs Magpie!

We get doves sunning themselves all stretched out like that in our yard, and I’ve sometimes seen magpies lying prostrate on the ground when there are aggressive magpies nearby, as an act of submission

We feel very special and honored that Mrs. Maggie has decided to think our backyard is a safe place for her.

The other day she had another magpie picking on her….so she flew in when I ame out the back and flew down to stand next to me.

I felt like a bodyguard…..lol

Love my backyard;D

You know, it doesn’t seem that long ago that a certain duckwoman was despairing because of the extreme dry Summer she had. Suggesting tossing in the towel on a patch forever and not being worth it etc.
Funny, can’t quite remember who that was. Bit of rain sure does change a perspective. ;-)

If you have a tape measure. Measure the height and width and i’ll tell you the volume.

Did you manage to catch any of that rainwater L1?

Yep:) Tank is as full as it can be;D

Picked a pile of baby spinach this morning….about to pick through it and make something with it for lunch.

I picked an armfull of Italian Spinach yesterday and cooked it down for the freezer. Ended up with one small container full.

You need poultry Bubba, they love spinach and lettuce in the afternoon.

Just back from Garden Grove. Much better quality seedlings than the Toyshop.

Bought some

eggplant
capsicum
chives
silverbeet

marygold & salvia for around Sam’s grave.

Elf wanted some portulaca seedlings

Weed fork (always wanted one)

2 varieties of sweet corn seeds.

Terricic and snow gold. The snow gold Sir Pete grows in the “Patch from Scratch” DVD.

Thats enough this pay. Next pay I want zucchinis and still thinking about the pumpkins…….

Photobucket
Photobucket

This morning both of us roughly leveled the soil down the back. As it was a bit warm for planting out seedlings and I was missing my little off-sider we called it quits and I went to sewing.

I put the bird bath into the wheel barrow to get it from the small garden area by the house to where it is now. Planted out the Qld Blue pumpkins and 4 zucchini seedlings.

The flowers are salvia and marigolds.

Only 1 area to be looked at and that is where another set of tomatoes will be going in a couple of weeks. Strawberries from Pepe will be to the right of the parsley hedge at the front near the lawn.

Still got the cucumbers to go and anything else I can sqeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze in….lol

But on a whole I am thrilled with the 5 day effort and I can now go back to sewing while these guys grow.

luuuurve Blue Wrens. Can’t wait to see what sort of birds will visit at my new place. I noticed that the previous owners have a feeding station near the veranda so I am assuming some sort of parrot comes to visit.

yep – new arrivals from the mount crawford forest. their successful migration to this area is due to deliberate tree planting along bird corridors.

good to see the corridors are working :D

Oh…….you are soooooooooooooo lucky…. I have only see 2 and both were so fleeting…….. I have some cute little B Wren statue on the while cupboard in the kitchen.

they are on the back verandah and have been within 2-3metres of us. they are tiny birds – much skinnier than the sparrow. and the ones here are a pair of juveniles with the male just beginning to colour.

Ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh ……….sigh

none of them are trained like your maggies. not much meat to spare in this vegetarian household with ravenous dogs. we don’t feed the birds they do get water bowls in shady spots tho’ – and a diet of earwigs

yeah – the neighbours have been checking.
the small wren could not previously negotiate the wide paddocks without cover. plenty of predators (kites, kestrels and peregrine falcon). now that the surveyed dirt road we often walk has been lined in trees as part of the heysen trail the little wrens can tree hop.

lovely :)

I’m finding the pair of crows that visit my yard and often use my bird bath for soaking bread in are getting very brave and not flying away if I am in the yard now, but they haven’t brought their babies in yet.

They leave rotten eggs, or egg bits, plus bits of meat, in the stock trough…thanks for the heads-up BlueGreen…

Yes, dhs managed to get the boy off to his new resi unit, witout any dramas. We made all these agreements with him that we would come and visit him next weekend, and ‘bring food’, LOL.

We will be getting an intervention order soonish, with conditions.

Time to just chill with the man and luxuriate in the silence.

Take before and after photos.

Me thinks tomorrow will be a better day as its raining some…..yay.

So back into the sewing room I go.

Lucky’s Duck Farm

Oh wow that asparagus is enormous!! :D

If you saw my pitiful single skinny little asparagus stalk you’d cry and say a prayer for it LOL!

Looking good Lucky :)

Thanks Anne:)

there is hope. Lucky managed to succeed with rhubarb in the end ;)

It was my absolute belief that she couldn’t do it that spurred her to success, I reckon ;)
