Only 11 days to go.
I might get in early.
I wonder if our population growth has stalled because of the Covids. Also, if there was any significant flight from the big cities to the regions.

It seems like Tassie has picked up a lot New South Welshmen and a substantal amount of Tasmanians who sold their homes to them moved to Queensland.

Nothing to do with lockdowns.
Any “stalling” would be due to cessation of immigration.
IIUC, immigration is the main contributor to population growth in Australia.
eg. “Nguyen” is the second most common surname in Melbourne.

It appears to be the same as DV’s point, population growth is down because immigration is right down, which is related to covid, but not lockdowns.
Presumably boomers getting older and falling of their perch in greater numbers has an effect too, but how significant I don’t know.

I did a death notices check to remove patient records from my files a few days ago. Here are the ages of the people who died ove the past couple of weeks (not all were my patients, I just listed all from Hamilton and Casterton). 96,93,85,96,86,98,92,88,92,82,93,81,93,86,83,89. And no, I didn’t just pull out the ones over 80. That was all of them. Don’t think any of them are boomers. I was a bit surprised, although we have noticed (but not actually done the stats) that the very elderly tend to drop off as the cold weather hits.

I guess Hamilton and Casterton is just populated with healthy people then :)
I mean in other parts of the country it is known for people to die in their 70’s or even 60’s.

The regions are supposed to be less healthy. But a lot of people do last well around here. Mind you, we also get the road accident young ones (trees that jump out onto the road and drag the car back onto the roadside) and a smattering of cancer people of all ages. And there are a few suicides irregularly through time.

Deaths in WA were a bit higher in 2021 than you’d expect on trend

must’ve been the lockdowns

If, as seems likely, there really are 15000 covid deaths in Australia in 2022, then this would mean about a 10% increase in the death rate. There may also be a resurgence in the rate of flu related deaths and deaths from other infectious diseases.
Midnight tonight.
But I won’t be staying up for it.
