Equatorial Space Australia owns and operates the Arnhem Space Centre (ASC), a multi-user commercial spaceport in East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, Australia at 12° S.

NASA to launch three rockets from Arnhem Space Centre in the Northern Territory – 3 weeks ago

Three rockets will be launched over a period of a month from the Arnhem Space Centre on the Dhupuma Plateau.

The government says the rockets will be used to investigate heliophysics, astrophysics and planetary science phenomena that can only be seen from the southern hemisphere.

Nhulunbuy prepares for historic rocket launch – Today

The launch will be conducted by a start-up called Equatorial Launch Australia, which owns and operates the Arnhem Space Centre in the Northern Territory, at 10.44 pm on Sunday.

The community of Nhulunbuy is buzzing with excitement ahead of Australia’s first commercial space launch taking place in the region. And it’s had one big impact on local businesses.

The first rocket will travel to over 300km in space and will carry an atmospheric observation and sensing platform to study the Alpha Centauri A and B constellations. NASA wants to conduct astrophysics studies that can only be done from the southern hemisphere.

The nation’s space industry is maturing after battling with bureaucrats to allow private companies to participate in the sector. The legislation we had was set up in a time when going to space looked like the Apollo 11 mission, not for private companies with small rockets. The Australian Space Agency, which was established in 2018, had overhauled the law and given private investors the confidence to back space start-ups.

(I agree with that comment about bureaucratic legislation. I’ve heard that negotiating the legislative maze was as tough as building the technology).

The site is somewhere near Nhulunbuy in Arnhem land.

The following is an aerial view of the site. The site is Vee shape, I don’t know which end of the Vee is the launch pad.

Did you cath the news?

The NASA launch from Arnhem land last night carried an X-ray instrument to study the whole Milky Way.

The next two launches planned a week apart, will carry UV instruments specifically designed to study Alpha Centauri.

I totally approve of the latter, Alpha Centauri A and B are very sunlike stars. More sunlike than any other stars in our vicinity. So it would be extremely interesting to see if they are also sunlike in the ultraviolet wavelengths seen be the SOHO and similar spacecraft. These rockets should solve the question of whether Alpha Centauri A and B have a super-hot solar corona like the Sun.

Australia gets somewhat lucky as we can take part often without having to spend the money or build it.
