An earthquake measuring moment magnitude (Mw ) 6.2 struck the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan on 22 June 2022.
It occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. The earthquake was the result of shallow strike-slip faulting.
At least 1,193–1,543 people died and 1,600–3,000 people were injured throughout Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“ Al Jazeera, stated that the earthquake resulted in at least 1,500 deaths and 3,000 injuries. However, state-run Bakhtar News Agency said that the casualties consisted of at least 1,150 fatalities and 1,600 injuries.”
Tectonically, the Indian plate pushing northward buts up against eastern Afghanistan. This is on the eastern border of Afghanistan, right near Pakistan.
Earthquake map, showing the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. This one is in eastern Afghanistan. The higher death toll in Afghanistan than Pakistan would be because there are more Afghani population centres near the location.
