Stacking rocks on a picturesque hiking trail may seem like a harmless act, but rangers and walking enthusiasts say the practice is doing more damage than we think, and they want to put an end to it.

“Most of us go to national parks to really experience that natural scenery, and just like scratching your name into a tree, rock stacks are seen as vandalism.”

Rock cairns have been used historically as navigational aids when there is no obvious track to follow—when used for this purpose the use is well respected.

No doubt in the instance of where other sinage cannot be placed. However, only the one cairn is required at each navigational poiint.

Again though this is anthropological elitist extremism. To not consider the welfare of the original inhabitants.

I’ve not heard of this rock stacking thing. Wouldn’t the ones in the creek bed just all get tumbled the next time the creek ran? It appears to be an ephemeral. In the meantime the insects can live in the crevices. And the photo of stacks on a beach…don’t the tides and storms just move everything?

maybe we can think of it more as a way to guide those who are passing through on the best way to minimise off track disruption

If the only stacks are navigational, yes. The problem appears to be that the types of floods that could redistribute the rocks are way less frequent than visiting stackers.

Almost all of the rock-stacking that the story refers to is done as a pose.

Go to the scenic spot, build your little rock cairn, take your atmospheric/New Age photo with your rock cairn artfully sited in the pic, and go away, leaving behind your own ‘ecologically-friendly’ equivalent of having spray-painted your initials on the rock face.

This. It is elitist vandalism.

Like happiness, this something you already are or have.

You don’t need to shit by the path in the woods to find this.
