Swatting biiiiiiig mossies here…only way to “total” them is to rub them along the skin after swatting, no lifting the hand or they fly away…

well the Possums are playing rough on the backyard this morning, so mr carpet snake hasn’t eaten all of them yet… there’s a boobok owl in the trees outside, the back verandah is full of frogs. And some one has a Rooster somewhere. I can hear the Curlews too.

that possum is doing quite well Thee, he’s part of a family that went quiet for a while, but they’re still around. The neighbour has fired up her vegie bed but in frustration (the possums are eating everything) she has made a igloo with chicken wire to keep everything out. Then she looks over the fence at our un-fenced patches and asks “Why me?”

Nope, this one is smaller, but still a decent sized snake, and this guy is a lot closer to the ol’ homestead…. He’s gone now, didn’t like the spotlight it seems.

Once I caught up chatting, I may even post photos.

Just rescued two green tree frogs from my office (where I sit)… One was a real dark green bugger and quite large. This is becoming a daily occurrence I think Green Tree Frogs are like Homing Pigeons. Oh well, they are now deep in the Sweet Potato patch where there are all sorts of crickets and grasshoppers…. I guess I’ll see those guys again tomorrow.

I took a head count while I was there. 20 Green Tree Frogs and 4 Cane Toads.

Haven’t seen the bats there since our first summer here. We would go to the park just before it got dark and see them swooping around – they just don’t seem to be there any more =/

in the Hayshed, Mummy Possum is hanging out with Junior, just waking up for the night to go feed on Mangoes…

and as we left the Hayshed, micro bats and fruit bats buzzed us for fun.

we did think that once before, but we reckon mum and baby possum hide in the gum trees when the python is around. we think he normally sleeps in the bamboo or one of the palms. we’re pretty sure daddy possums lives in the coconuts.

and his the python thick in the middle…? well he’s pretty thick from head to tip at the moment, i’d guess and say he’s thicker then my forearm.

Guinea fowl are supposed to be good for alerting you to snakes, plus they make great bug eaters.

well after looking at a few images… the fast moving snake is now tentatively known as a Coastal Taipan, quite possibly Australia’s most aggressive and dangerous snake…. hope he finds a home in the neighbour’s yard real quick.

I reckon

we did think that once before, but we reckon mum and baby possum hide in the gum trees when the python is around. we think he normally sleeps in the bamboo or one of the palms. we’re pretty sure daddy possums lives in the coconuts.

and his the python thick in the middle…? well he’s pretty thick from head to tip at the moment, i’d guess and say he’s thicker then my forearm.

I don’t mind pythons but I still wouldn’t want to have them living next to me.

PM, Did you ever see those pics of the python eating a possum that a friend of ours oserved?

I do recall those photos, wasn’t it a whip snake or sumthink?

No, it was a carpet snake. A huge one too. In surban Brisbane. Obviously a pet that had escaped.

I have spoken with the neighbours and they say the local carpet snake goes from our place to the guys place a few doors down… apparently it is well known in the neighbourhood. They say that there used to be an Amethystine Python around too… it would be interesting to see that guy. Carpet Pythons can grow to 3m when the Amethystines can get to 5.

spoke to another neighbour today, he said “Yup prolly a Taipan, that or an Eastern Brown, you get both of those this time of year”, and the python is often in his shed when it ain’t in ours. They used to Frill-necks around here but not for sometime now, too many houses, and the crocs well…. that’s a one in a hundred year experience.

at first suspected it was a Taipan, but after it found its own way out, we think it was a tree snake, and I should have just picked it up and excused it meself.

You’d have to be a bit eccentric to wear them. I fancy I have seen some though.
