Haven’t been reading this thread but:

1. Australia is an island, and particularly susceptible to submarine warfare. For much of the post WW2 period, the RAN was primarily an antisubmarine navy (and quite good at it).

2. the best weapon for hunting and killing a submarine is another submarine.
