My boyz have been buying Phantom comics for some years now, either that or they’ve begun to breed, and I was wondering if anybody knows how to store these so they don’t get damaged (lose their pages) and remain accessible as just about everybody in this family likes to read them…?

Not gardening I know…should I ask over at SSSF?

Thanks Lucky…I think there’s over 100 magazines by now…maybe I should look at horizontal storage instead of vertical…putting the mags into sleeves and the sleeves into what? display folders or arch-levers? and laying them flat on the bookshelves…

Well to save money……. look for boxes made of thicker cardboard and cut them down to the shape for using as a book holder thingo……blast can’t think of the name of them:(

I know the storage you mean…these are very flimsy little comics, no spine at all (unlike their hero), and flop everywhere, which is why I’m considering flat storage…

you can get special comic collector sleeves that will keep them in mint condition. but they are expensive and probably not what you are after. They are usually about A4 size, aren’t they? What about the boxes that you get photocopy paper in? Or magazine binders, the ones that have little metal rods that go down the middle of the magazines and hold 12 magazines a piece.

Down at super cheap there are plasctic storage boxes with clip on lids each box holds around a hundred. that way you can chuck them dow the back somewhere the mice and rge general rising samp etc won’t easily harm them and yes.. when the kids come home for the weekend you grab a box and they have a hunderd comics.

The latter is what I’m thinking of, but 12 into 100-odd ….I’d need to consider the expense…will have a look at some of the shoe boxes lying around as a temporary measure…

Off to google magazine binders…

LOL! as storage units, plastic holds its’ own …I have some boxes dating back to when we first moved here (16 years ago) and in spite of our hot summers, they are still OK…mind you some have cracked but I think they may have been left in sunlight at some stage…

yep, any or all of thse shops will have aisles of plastic storage containers to choose from .. a couple of bucks for a hundred comics? not a lot.. and once they are in the box you can lose the box until the kids ask for it.

Hehe :) I am trying to replace the plastic used in the kitchen, but I can’t think of a better option for the shed – need to store things like B&B, lime, chicken pellets, and so on, in quantities too big for ice cream containers but way too small for a standard sized “bin” – and I like the idea of square plastic tubs so I can see how much is left. Going to check out Bunnings on the weekend.

Umm.. sorry, I have no helpful ideas about the comic books :)

Actually.. I know of a few businesses who have cleaned up old paper work and ended up giving away a bunch of plastic files (the large a4 ringbound type ones) for free. My brother had a job cleaning them up prior to disposal as a teenager. I just can’t think how you would find a company that might be giving them away =/ (my work has offered us a bunch to take home, which is why I thought of it)

First I’d be finding out if any are valuable. Phantom comics are very collectable and some might warrant special attention.

I very much doubt our little collection is collectable, especially as some have been read and re-read and re-read, but the collectability issue is in the back of my mind, which is why I want to organise and store them …

I quite understand that you don’t fancy Phantom comics Lucky, I love the derring-do myself and all the mysteries and it is a few minutes of suspended belief…like never worry about how he can swim in his costume and emerge onto a boat and not leave wet tracks…he takes his street clothes off and somehow always gets them back…I like seeing Mandrake and some movie stars and such, pop up in the comics every now and then…but yes, the Phantom is definitely a personal taste thing…

I might have to store them in old photocopy boxes for the time being until I work something out…might have another look around OfficeWorks in Rocky next time I’m there…

Thanks to all for their input :)

Dinetta.. They aren’t valuable unless they are old original copies, which by the way have all been bought.
I personally know a bloke who paid something in the order of $2,500 for the original phantom comic.

The ones you possibly have are most likely reprints and worth little more than depreciated face value unless there was a shortage of supply.

Well, it goes like this.. Knowledge is one thing but getting people to pay the proper price for it is another.

I don’t have a love for money nor desire it so therefore I’m not a good business man. I should go around knocking on the doors of those who conveniently forget to pay.

I know it is off topic. but it was raised. So, I have been introduced to people by others who are successful businessmen who have employed me.. their introduction? : “This is Peter, he could be a multimillionaire if he actually liked making money. The stuff in his head is priceless.” Funny thing is, they’d rather employ backpackers and train them or try to pay me less than they pay the backpackers.
