A whole baby woolly mammoth has been found frozen in the permafrost of north-western Canada – the first such discovery in N. America. The mummified ice age mammoth is thought to be more than 30,000 years old. It was found by gold miners in Yukon’s Klondike region on June 21, 2022.

That is a surprise. I thought North America didn’t have mammoths, only mastodon.

Seems like I was wrong.

North America was covered in ice not long ago, and the gap between Russia and America was a short wander across the ice for the animals that survived and were suited to it

Previously DNA has been recovered from mammoths a million years old.

Hopefully it is, but chances are it might be recoverable. I think DNA has been recovered from older samples found in similar conditions in the Siberian permafrost, but not the complete genome.

There is a whole army of crackpots out there who want to clone/create a woolly mammoth. They claim that all they need is one sample with some well preserved DNA.

Maybe they could start on something with a better sampled genome like the thylacine, I miss my stripy bois
