Subject: At bluegreen's place

When we first moved into this house (renting then) about 13 years ago a lone gladioli would struggle up through the weeds of a neglected garden bed, but never flowered. At the time I could not do much gardening so it continued to be neglected. Eventually it seemed to have given up and disappeared.

Many years later much of the soil in that bed was dug out and deposited elsewhere and native plants were grown in the resulting new bed, and the old one filled with scoria to make a cactus and succulent garden for my son.

Late last year I noticed a couple of green leaf blades growing in the native bed that did not look like anything I had planted there. As it didn’t suit that bed I dug it up late last year and popped it into the front garden where I am growing more cottagey style plants. I really didn’t expect much to come of it, so you will understand why I call this my …

not really. I propped it open when they were locked in the pen, and let it close when they were out during the day. Once I saw that they were using it without it being propped open then I stopped doing that.

It can hold quite a bit so I can have a good supply for them on call without the sproggies pinching it.

Well Bluegreen its a great way to feed them. At the moment I am sprinkling pellets round the place to make sure the “Blue Rinse” set are eating.

the perch swings down when they sit on it and levers push the lid up. When they get off the perch it swings up again and the lid closes.

are you sure that second piccie isn’t some sort of bird trap??
some birds do look like ‘lizards flat out drinking’ – don’t they?

it is a bit of a reach – even after I moved the perch up a bit (designed for full sized chooks.) but I think this chook has realised that if she pushes aside the top pellets she can get down to where the food trickles through and pick out the corn and sunflower seeds, leaving the pellets behind.

chuckle – that would be right – they are never satisfied even though their crops are full.

Bluegreen, I wasn’t hanging around the forum when you originally posted this, and only just noticed it.

You may have answered the following question, but I can’t find it in this thread:

Where did you buy the chook feeder from?

If I give him the instructions and drop a huge, fat, hairy hint (i.e. marginally short of being demanding, lol!) that I would love one for my birthday, I might have a little teensy bit of a chance.

Mr Y loves playing with metal. So it might even be a medium-sized chance :)

I just showed Mr Y the photos, BG, and he said that it would be dead easy for him to make. I suggested he could make some and sell them (he’s just waiting to sort out insurance and then he’s got to this business of his going). He said he could even make them into a flat-pack and post them.

Hmm, ideas all the time!!

I got a couple of these old painter’s trellises at a garage sale a while ago for $10 the pair. No good for supporting a painter any more but I figured they would make good frames for climbing veges. I cable tied some plastic netting over one today and have sowed some Purple King Climbing beans on one side and some Japanese Climbing Cucumber on the other. Also scattered some parsley seed next to it.
