I’ve heard of Ons because she won the jr title at Wimbledon a while back. It’s somewhat unusual for an A-rab to excel in Women’s sports

Yeah, let ‘em win a Wimbledon title and next thing, they’ll be wanting to drive down to the shops without a male-relative chaperone.

In fairness Tunisia ain’t like Saudi. Indeed they have a female PM.

Yes, if i had to visit part of ‘the Arab world’, Tunisia would quite possibly be my choice.

someone should embarrass grunters by saying. “Do you grunt like that during sex”?
Might shut them up.
Dunno.

No it won’t.
They do it deliberately because it masks the sound of the racquet hitting the ball, which is an important audible clue for the opponent about how hard the ball has been hit. The grunts are timed to happen as they hit the ball.

I would make it illegal. I think it spoils the game.

So, rather than the sound of the racquet and ball announcing that the ball has been hit, the player simply gives a shout to announce that the racquet is hitting the ball?
Well, there’s obviously an advantage in that.
…no, there isn’t.
Grunters are annoying.
Yelpers are worse.

Did you read what he wrote? It’s not about the when, it’s about how hard…

Stringed racquets have a sweet spot, when the ball is struck in the sweet spot it get maximum power. A slightly miss-hit shot has less power. The sound it makes when the ball is struck is different for the miss-hit. The grunt is to make it harder to hear if the ball was hit cleanly or miss-hit.
(I haven’t followed tennis for ages, but this is what they were saying about the grunt at the time I did follow it)

They should all have developed a better sense than hearing the grunt by now.

OK, i can dig that.
Grunting and yelping should be allowed.
But, players who indulge in it should wear one of those anti-barking dog collars.
Loud yelp or grunt: spray of citronella in the face, or a tiny electric shock to the neck.
Choice is theirs.
just turn off the sound

But, then i won’t be able to hear the racquet hit the ball and judge how hard it’s been hit.

sorry we meant for the remote audience, obviously for players it’s a different ball game
yes we agree the noises are unfavourable but not being up there with them we literally do confine ourselves to turning the sound off
when you hit the ball cleanly it makes a very satisfying sharp crack sound. A miss-hit is a bit duller.
Elena Ice-lady wins two set to one. It was a pretty good match to watch.

I didn’t stay up for the Men’s Doubles final. It was won by the Aussies, Ebden and Purcell in a five-setter.

Well that’s good news:)
It seems strange to me that I had not heard a word of these two on either tv or internet.
Not that I follow tennis that closely, but I have heard plenty about that australian guy who managed to get into the singles final.

They were runners-up at the Australian Open, losing to Kyrgios and Kokkinakis in the final.
Unfortunately doubles tennis does not have the profile it deserves.
