Rome (CNN)Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said Thursday that he would resign, after the 5-Star movement — the largest party in the country’s coalition government — withdrew its support in a parliamentary confidence vote.
Draghi’s measures — a package designed to tackle Italy’s cost-of-living crisis — passed by 172 to 39. However, the 5-Star boycott leaves the government at real risk of collapse and could lead to an early election.
After winning the vote but losing 5-Star’s support, Draghi said in a statement: “I want to announce that this evening I will present my resignation to the President of the Republic.”

“Today’s votes in Parliament are very significant from a political point of view. The majority of national unity that has supported this government since its creation is no longer there,” he added.

He had previously said that he would not lead a government that did not include 5-Star.
However, Italy’s President, Sergio Mattarella, has rejected Draghi’s resignation, instead asking Draghi to address the parliament in order to assess the political situation, the Italian Presidency said in a statement.
“The President of the Republic did not accept the resignation and invited the Prime Minister to appear before Parliament to make communications, so that an assessment of the situation that has arisen as a result of the outcome of the session held today in the Senate of the Republic could be carried out in its proper forum,” the statement said.

Interesting that the president can “force” the PM to continue being PM.

What if he wanted to spend more time with his family?

I’ve found it really difficult to know which Italian politicians have, and which haven’t. I’ve given up trying.

Draghi’s experience is primarily in banking, and he was selected to run a technocratic government that would deal with Italy’s immediate crises without shifting the needle too much politically. He governed with the consent of a broad swath of parties from the left, centre and right, but eventually resigned when it became clear that workable policies were not going to pass. In the normal course of events an election was expected in 2023, but President Mattarella dissolved parliament, called for Draghi to stay on in a caretaker role, and scheduled elections for 25 Sep. Mattarella and Draghi are both independents but can be considered left of centre.

Polling would indicate that this will be a good election for the Right.

Broadly the Left parties are averaging these polling numbers
Democrats 24%
More Europe 2%
Civic Commitment 1%
Action 6%
Green Left 4%
——
Total 37%.

Parties of the Right
Brothers of Italy 22%
Lega 15%
Forza Italia 7%
Italexit 3%
Noi Moderati 1%
——
Total 48%

The Five Star Movement is kind of … mixed, with some left and some conservative ideas but defo Euroskeptic and a little Putinesca. They are polling around 10% and could go either way.

It appears the polling was reasonably accurate. Georgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy look like getting around 25% of the vote, which will make them the largest member of the Right Alliance. Italy uses a system where a third of seats are first past the post and the remainder are proportional representation. The various members of the Right Alliance added up appear to be they are going to get about 44%, but that will probably end up being >50% of seats.

Maybe because the fictional Ukrainian Nazis tend to stay home, and not attack other peoples’ countries as anywhere as frequently as the Russians do, or as the Italian Fascists seemed to be wont to do.

Or because they seem to have eschewed the practice of blaming everything on the Jews, to the point we’re they’re happy to have a Jew as their president.

Not like Putin, whose recent remarks suggest that he’s positioning himself to pin it on the Jews again.

I have to go out now, but i’ll be happy to supply you with a list of references when i return, if you’d like to see just how misguided you are.

Still remember when SWMBO called from Perth and I said, hang on someone’s just flown a plane into the twin towers.

Brothers of Italy ended with 119 of the 400 seats. With support from Forza Italia and Lega, they’ll be able to hold government.

The key policy adjectives of BoI are:

abortion bans
same sex marriage bans
naval blockade to prevent migration
weakening the role of the EU

Meloni herself is opposed to vaccine mandates, supports Italy regaining the parts of Slovenia and Croatia that were formerly Italian territory, and appears to believe in the Great Replacement Conspiracy by which hidden figures want to replace Italy’s population with Africans.

On the bright side BoI supports Nato and opposes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A lot of commentators are calling BoI neo-fascist but I’m a bit reticent to bring out the F word. They are a bit Orbany but without the Putin-worship. It certainly is concerning that, of all the parties that will make up the ruling coalition, Forza Italia is the most moderate.

Not much, Tucker Carlson wasn’t even born and Ralph “Sonny” Barger was 24 and had only been riding with Hells Angels for 5 years.

Wonder if she gives petrol stations a side glance when passing them by.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi sparked controversy this week when audio released by Italian news agency LaPresse revealed the 86-year-old speaking about his “re-established” relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Berlusconi says in the audio that Putin sent him 20 bottles of vodka and a “very sweet letter” on his birthday last month.

His office confirmed with CNN on Thursday that the clips were authentic — apparently having been secretly recorded during a meeting of Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party in the parliamentary chamber on Tuesday.
