A review of existing studies by University College London (UCL) found that depression is not likely to be caused by a chemical imbalance and asked patients to consider other treatments over antidepressant medication.

However, other medical experts are urging people not to stop taking their antidepressants because of the findings and argue they are effective in treating depression.

OK,so the thing we’re taking the pills for is not the problem, but taking the pills helps to cope with the symptoms/effects of the problem.

A lot of things are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain: falling in love and wanting to get married, believing in the idea that you’ll prosper by hard work, voting for the L/NP unless you’re a billionaire…

My favourite neurotransmitter.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors work. Don’t lose their potency with time. And aren’t addictive.

Suitable for everyone who isn’t hysterical, manic, or hyperactive.

Also, serotonin is a near universal neurotransmitter among metazoa. It even plays a part in locust behaviour.

I want to sample Loch Ness for serotonin the next time there’s a sighting of the monster. I think the results would be interesting.
