A 12 inch pizza gives you 44% more pizza than a 10 inch, but at a price 75% more than that of the 10 inch.
Two 10 inch pizzas give you 38% more pizza than a 12 inch, for only 10% more than the cost of a 12 inch.

‘Active shooter’ is a term that annoys me.
To a degree, it suggests that there’s a lot of ‘shooters’ out there (maybe there is) who just haven’t been ‘activated’ yet, but, don’t worry, their turn will come. So, people should just accept that it’s going to happen, and get on with things until the next one is somehow ‘activated’.
Also, it’s something of a euphemism, perhaps also meant to down play the phenomenon and encourage people to accept it as just another facet of modern life.
Might at least one of two of them rethink their choice and decide that they’d rather not be known by a less innocuous label of, say, ‘murderous f***ing lunatic’? if the media and cops were to call them what they really are?

Definition
In general it can be defined as a variation on previous work, in which the newly created work has a meaning that is antagonistic or antithetical to the original. The original media work that is détourned must be somewhat familiar to the target audience, so that it can appreciate the opposition of the new message. The artist or commentator making the variation can reuse only some of the characteristic elements of the originating work.
Détournement is similar to satirical parody, but employs more direct reuse or faithful mimicry of the original works rather than constructing a new work which merely alludes strongly to the original. It may be contrasted with recuperation, in which originally subversive works and ideas are themselves appropriated by mainstream media.

I sometimes wonder what French-speaking people make of shop windows in UK , US, Australia etc. which have large signs in them announcing ‘SALE!’.
‘Sale’ in French means ‘dirty’, so ‘SALE!SALE!SALE!’ = ‘DIRTY!DIRTY!DIRTY!’.

According to Gershon Legman (in The Rationale of the Dirty Joke) ties, like belt ends, are representative of the owner’s penis. I haven’t fact checked this, but if true, it makes one wonder about those ties with wide ends and pictures of nude women on them.

Yes, there’s obvious similarities, but i do admire the mastering of light and shade to produce in an instant something akin to what would have take a long time to study and consider and apply to canvas in a series of sittings.

Well, Girl With A Pearl Earring is, strictly speaking, not a Renaissance painting either, and the girl in Vermeer’s painting doesn’t look entirely serene, but rather a trifle surprised and concerned.
And not all Renaissance art was ‘serene’. Masaccio’s early Renaissance ‘ Martyrdom of San Giovanni Battista’ (1426) is anything but:

In fact, a lot of the art that most people think of as ‘Renaissance’ is not Renaissance at all, but from the later Baroque period.

Well evidently it is a very early spreadsheet.
But the meme-ing of life?
Do the numbers add up to 42?

I’m watching old Batman TV shows. Season 2. There are 60 episodes with two shows per episode!
It’s different watching it as an adult.
As a child I noticed the cliff-hanger in the middle of each episode, the ‘biff, bam, bop’ words that appear during each fist fight, and the stupidity of commissioner Gordon and chief O’Hara.
As an adult, what strikes me most is the huge number of famous people who appear on the screen:
Phillis Diller, Sammy Davis Jr, Liberace (as villain), the Green Hornet, Vincent Price (as villain), colonel Klink, Morticia (as villain), captain Binghamton (from McHale’s Navy), Lurch, various famous cowboy stars, and others.
Also the re-use of large props in the cliffhanger, a pair of large clear plastic cones appear as an hourglass, slushie holder and reverberation chamber. And others.
As an adult, I see the tongue in cheek comments better. eg. when Catwoman and friend are discussing whether to sleep with Robin of Batman is the line “not Robin, boys that age only think of baseball”, whereas in real life Burt Ward had been doing porno movies for at least two years.

Project Carnivore monitors all electronic communications. And i do mean ALL. Every e-mail, every mobile phone call, every internet post. Everything. Absolutely everything.
It uses cascading algorithms. A trigger word or phrase will refer the comm for the next level of analysis, and then the next if so indicated, and then the next, and the next, until it gets to a human analyst and so on.
Everything. All the time. Especially in the Five Eyes and associated nations.

However, the CIA is not allowed to spy internally on US citizens, but are allowed to monitor traffic going in and out of the US, which is why the email a US citizen sends to his flatmate goes via offshore servers. I assume Australia is no different.

Yeah. Not in that mock-up as there’s large steel beams holding the floors up and they get in the way. On the 747 freighters the entire passenger deck is completely empty, there’s a huge amount of space.

Is that genuine?
I have a book on my shelves called “How to amputate a leg”.
That one’s genuine, as is “The home taxidermist handbook”.
But some funny book titles are made up.
Anyway, this cartoon’s too nice not to repost here, even though I don’t agree with the sentiments.

The problem is that ‘drinking’ can mean different things in different places.
There’s an awful lot of Scandinavians who have no grasp at all of the idea of ‘putting the cap back on the bottle’. When they begin drinking, they can foresee only one possible end to the occasion – and it won’t be pretty.
So, a lot of media consumers/voters might imagine that their PM is perhaps subject to bouts of such irresponsibility.

Let’s make assumptions for calculations:
1. This refers to Brisbane water charges ( i know it’s not Brisbane, but for e.g.)
2. It was a 1 litre water bottle
The ‘top level’ water charge in Brisbane is $1.74 per kilolitre.
So, the water would cost 0.174 cents per litre.
I think that the cleaner could be really generous, and discount them for the equivalent of 12 litres of water!
I wonder what they’ll do with their 2 cent windfall?

Perhaps this is the point that NG is making. The OP is complaining about the casting of Delirium but that character doesn’t actually appear in the show and NG is archly referring to that.
I like the sense of humour.

Talk about high bills:
There was a bit on BBC News the other day about how the average domestic gas & electric bill in the UK in the next 12 months may well be 6000 pounds($AU 10,250.00).

A url is broken down into a number of parts that are used by the server to identify the resource that you are requesting and, in this case, some url parameters that Facebook uses as tracking data.
The url parameters begin with a question mark and then are separated by ampersands.
Facebook uses a Content Delivery Network (cdn) system that consists of many servers located around the world intended to distribute images, videos, etc as quickly and smoothly as possible.
Here is a breakdown of the url above:
scontent-syd2-1.xx : subdomain
fbcdn.net : domain (Face Book Content Delivery Network.net)
/v/t39.30808-6/ : path to image on the server (similar to the folder structure on your computer)

The answer is : it depends. Some server script may check for the existence and validity of certain parameters and refuse to deliver the resource if those parameters are missing or tampered. Others don’t care.

Never ‘eard of him.
“Robert Hunter Caldwell (born August 15, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter and musician. He released several albums spanning R&B, soul, jazz and adult contemporary. He is known for his soulful and versatile vocals. Caldwell released the hit single and his signature song “What You Won’t Do for Love” from his double platinum debut album Bobby Caldwell in 1978. After several R&B and smooth jazz albums, Caldwell turned to singing standards from the Great American Songbook. He wrote many songs for other artists, including the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “The Next Time I Fall” for Amy Grant and Peter Cetera. Caldwell’s music is frequently sampled by hip hop and R&B artists.”
So what is this “adult contemporary” thing?

There were many millennia between the Flintstones and the Jetsons, but they were both fairly typical 1960s American families.

With these things, i’ve found that it doesn’t help to actually look for the object. You have to relax, ‘zone out’ a little, not focus intently (either visually or mentally), and just let it appear.

That’s pretty impressive.

I’ve had a quick play – it’s broken. I cannot see anything in the bloody images.
You need to focus your eyes either in front or behind the image plane.
I never knew you could focus in front!
Just tried it and the 3D seems to come up quicker, but not so sharp for me. (I’m short sighted, and view with glasses removed)

technically, not focus, but converge or diverge your individual eye directions to get the images to realign
the actual optical focus should still be the page

essentially a ringing artefact

Here’s a bit of background about focusing and un-focusing eyes.
Can Everyone Unfocus Their Eyes?
You can practice focusing on close, mid and far away objects, this will strengthen your ciliary muscles in your eyes with regular exercise.
from the link
Your eyes contain muscle fibers that help you see objects up close, as well as those that are far away.
When you’re looking at an object or reading material up close, your ciliary muscles contract. This gives the lenses flexibility so they can change shape and help you focus.
The opposite effect happens when you’re trying to “unfocus,” or defocus, your eyes. In such cases, the ciliary muscles in your eyes relax. This process also helps you see objects that are far away.
Normally, you don’t have to think about whether you need to “focus” or “unfocus” your eyes. The lenses in your eyes automatically adjust so that you can see your best at all distances.
However, some people may find it more challenging to unfocus their eyes. You may be able to tell this is a problem if you’re having difficulty seeing objects, words, or images when the distances are changed.

It’s waaaay easier to converge than diverge your eyes. Think of going cross eyed.

No, it won’t. It may increase your conscious control, but those muscles don’t “bulk up” like skeletal muscle does.

One of the scorpion pics on the page linked to before I just couldn’t get by diverging, but snapped into place when I crossed my eyes while staying focused on the image.
However, I find diverging gives a better result for everything else.

Converging or diverging inverts the 3D-ness of the image.

can they weaken and atrophy if unused
yes, they can weaken if unused. so using them, exercises them. simple.
because normally its all automatic, exercises will just help that automatic behaviour.
The eye muscles cannot be turned into super muscles. Just expect normal focusing from the exercises
Can you strengthen your eyes with exercises? No but it will help your eyes to focus normally, don’t expect super vision.
With Certain conditions and certain diseases eye exercises will not show any improvement.
Yes I wear glasses, yes I do eye exercises, the eye exercises will keep your eyes normal, don’t expect supervision.
In my opinion.
Can you strengthen your eyes with exercises ?
For centuries, people have promoted eye exercises as a “natural” cure for vision problems, including eyesight.
There’s very little credible scientific evidence suggesting that eye exercises can improve vision.
However, exercises can help with eyestrain and may help your eyes feel better.

Just tried it with the chessboard and at least for that one I found it much easier to look into the distance, you don’t actually need to diverge.
With glasses removed and eyes relaxed I’m focused on about 50 cm away, which probably helps with the look into distance method.

Allai rode up to me, and, with many ejaculations, besought me not only to ride with my gun at the ready, but the moment I caught a glimpse of a man behind either bush or boulder to fire at him first, and ask questions after. His fear was that some of the rascals of the village we had just left would get on ahead, form an ambuscade, and fire upon us as we approached. He himself was evidently determined to use his gun whenever he got a chance ; and, in spite of all I could say, made us all uncomfortable by his nervousness throughout the journey ; the more so, as we had opportunities of seeing that in most things Allai was as hardy as other men.

It’s a visible manifestation of ‘compressibility’ where the air ahead of a moving object gets compressed to where the water vapour in the air condenses.
It was that phenomenon which caused such problems for pilots of straight-wing prop-driven aircraft late in WW2 and the mid-1940s, when their aircraft were able to approach Mach 1, especially in dives of various angles.

In Australia, they don’t get you to do that. It was covered by Sections 70 and 79 of the Crimes Act 1914 which automatically applied to any ‘Commonwealth officer’ and to anyone else as a ‘third party’.
In 2018, those sections were superseded by Part 5.6 (Secrecy of information) of the Criminal Code, which is even more wide-ranging.

Looks like the cab got a good shake up on the bottom of the bridge too.
Many trucking companies employ steering wheel holders because they are cheaper than machine operators. This is the result. 100 times the cost of paying someone who knows what they are doing. Then the $1000/hr executive that caused the damage blames the $15/hr victim.

Look, it;s perfectly understandable. It’s lunchtime and you’re fanging for a South Melbourne market dimi or three; are you in any fit state to be looking at warning signs – the dimis are up there, just around the corner FFS!

looks like the cab struck under the bridge at impact, forcing the whole truck up at an angle, which impacted the cab,
two criss-crossing laser beams at bridge height connected to red lights would help the problem,
or a set of hanging chains.
cause it will keep happening.

Have you been down to Montague Street? There are hanging things for warnings. There are signs well back (and have been for many many years) advising of the clearance. From Wikipedia:
>>In June 2016, the Victorian state government installed two warning gantries on the two main approaches to the bridge on Normanby Road and City Road. Black and yellow paddles hang from the gantries to the height of the bridge; if any of the paddles hit a vehicle as it drives under the gantry, this will warn the driver to divert their course to avoid hitting the bridge. Additional signage has been installed in surrounding streets, providing a total of 26 advanced warning signs about the bridge.
Since the installation of the gantries, over a dozen more vehicles crashed into the bridge – including a truck carrying sheets of glass on 13 June 2018. <<

raising it would be costly
another option would be to gouge a dip in the road under the bridge, lowering the road.

It started dropping at a lower point and before the body, the body had slight upward momentum, and the glass has less air resistance.
G is also an acceleration, so the difference is exaggerated.

the “glass” is cgi.
Take a look at 41s. The glass moves its entire length, about 2 metres down, in about 7 frames (0.29 seconds). Even with zero resistance, it should move 80 centimetres in that time.
Is the panel tensioned in order to support a rapid drop on breaking, for safety reasons?

600 dB is equivalent to 10^60 times the reference, which in this case is 1×10⁻¹² W/m².
Even if we were to assume that this is the level right at the end of the funnel, and that the funnel has a diameter of 10 cm, and hence an area of around 0.0078 m^2, the total power from this horn would be around 8 × 10^45 W.
The sun has a total output of around 4 × 10^26 W, so this horn has a power of about 20 quintillion suns, ie 20 million million million suns.
The Andromeda Galaxy, which is a largish galaxy as things go, has a power of 10^37 W. So this horn has a power of about 800 million Andromeda Galaxies.

I had a hunt about for the decibel level of coastal foghorns.
These are REALLY big instruments, not much used these days, but still around.
Typically not more than 120 dB, even the loudest of them didn’t/doesn’t exceed 150 dB.
If these horns we really 600 dB, as the ad seems to (deceptively) suggest, they’d probably be quite injurious to people and animals, and possibly even structures.

They’re Lanchester armoured cars, probably Mk IIs. Introduced in the late 1920s, used mostly in the Middle East and Far East.
If there were any in Britain during WW2, then deception would really have been their only practical use.

* SWMBO forced me to throw it out, let’s face it, I’m a bowerbird, I don’t throw out anything.Just read a new scientist article about how the internet used to be smaller and friendlier.

The original cult appliance: ‘My mother used the electric frypan constantlyhttps://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/sep/17/the-original-cult-appliance-my-mother-used-the-electric-frypan-constantly
This brings back memories.
I’ve got Mr buffy’s Mum’s grey, round Kambrook one sitting in the pantry. We’ve had it since she died (almost 25 years ago now) but I don’t recall ever using it. It lived at the Casterton house/practice because “it might be useful”. It must be a “modern” one though, it’s got a teflon lining.
