I am slowly becoming aware that there are other ways to get a slight alcohol high.

Either by a non-standard method of assimilation, or from different alcohols.

Non-standard method of assimilation would include inhalation (nightclub air, the smell of perfume, the smell of baking bread) and skin absorption (perfume on the skin, alcohol hand wash, original KFC moist towelettes). For example, in bread made from yeast the yeast produces ethanol, a lot of which is vapourised during the baking process adding a psychological kick to the smell of baking bread. For example, the higher the alcohol content of perfume, the higher the cost.

Different alcohols would include methanol, isopropanol, peppermint, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol. eg. menthol cigarettes. At a first guess, the larger the alcohol the smaller the effect because larger molecules would have more difficulty getting through the blood-brain barrier.

I’m beginning to wonder if there are any scientific studies of a slight alcohol high from a non-standard method of assimilation, or from different alcohols.

“Poisonings by the toxic alcohols (methanol, ethylene glycol, isopropanol, diethylene glycol, and propylene glycol) … Isopropyl alcohol toxicity is associated with rapid inebriation…. Isopropanol ingestion is the most common toxic alcohol ingestion reported to the United States poison control centers each year. In 2009, more than 20,000 cases were reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, with more than 80% of these cases being unintentional.”

On menthol.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menthol
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%9A-opioid_receptor

Menthol is made synthetically or obtained from the oils of corn mint, peppermint, or other mints.

Menthol has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities, and it is widely used to relieve minor throat irritation. Menthol also acts as a weak κ-opioid receptor agonist. KOR agonists are potently analgesic, and have been employed clinically in the treatment of pain. However, KOR agonists also produce side effects such as dysphoria, hallucinations, and dissociation. These hallucinogenic effects are sought by recreational users.

Menthol’s ability to chemically trigger the cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors in the skin is responsible for the well-known cooling sensation it provokes when inhaled, eaten, or applied to the skin. In this sense, it is similar to capsaicin, the chemical responsible for the spiciness of hot chilis.

Menthol is a topical antibacterial agent, effective against several types of streptococci and lactobacilli.

Natural menthol is obtained by freezing peppermint oil. The resultant crystals of menthol are then separated by filtration. Total world production of menthol in 1998 was 12,000 tonnes of which 2,500 tonnes was synthetic. In 2005, the annual production of synthetic menthol was almost double.

Menthol reacts in many ways like a normal secondary alcohol.

The estimated lethal dose for menthol (and peppermint oil) in humans may be as low as 50–500 mg/kg. LD50 Acute: 3300 mg/kg (Rat). 3400 mg/kg (Mouse). 800 mg/kg (Cat). Survival after doses of 8 to 9 g have been reported. Overdose effects are abdominal pain, ataxia, atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, coma, dizziness, lethargy, nausea, skin rash, tremor, vomiting, vertigo.
