Given the deaths/ injuries caused by e-scooters wouldn’t it be better if they were on the road? I’ve more or less been driven away from visiting one place because its too dangerous to walk a child on the pavement.

Um.

I had to ask my council to allow special permission to ride my bike on the footpath, because it was too dangerous to ride on the road.

Are the accidents due to lack of rules or dumb arse riders.

Re my previous comment, the council changed the law so that an adult is allowed to ride a bicycle on a footpath if the adult is accompanied by a child.

I can’t even imagine a death caused by an e-scooter colliding with a pedestrian.

I can imagine a death caused by a mobility scooter colliding with a pedestrian. The motors on those things have enormous torque. An e-scooter would by significantly less dangerous.

As for e-scooters on roads, there’s an e-scooter that goes past here every week or so, but I don’t remember if it goes on the footpath or the road. It doesn’t much matter.

Hold on, by e-scooter you do mean one of these, don’t you?

Not one of these

Or these

Or these

Yeah, leave them all over the place instead of those things you have to stand on.

Much more comfortable to ride around in and leave it where ever.

Better to sit down and enjoy the ride.

No I’m not talking about mobility scooters but the two wheeled type above. Normally the rider knocks some old lady flying , kills her or puts her into hospital for months on end9

Regulation + better infrastructure

Regulate the speed to (say) 25 km/h with electric assist. Could be higher or lower speed depending upon what is considered safe. I choose 25 km/h because EU regulations restrict electric bicycles to that speed with electric assist. If you want to go faster than than the motor cuts out and you need to do it all with your own muscle power. So why not the same for electric assisted scooters – the electronics already exists.

Build better dual-use pathways where these things can be used along with pedestrians.

These scooter things can go upwards of 50-60 km/h depending on the weight of the person riding it. This should only be allowed for open, long distance, dedicated bikeways with no pedestrians.

No way these things should be on the road mixing with regular traffic. That is just silly.
