In the past, supporters of Beijing have argued that China was not prepared to use force to take Taiwan, that Taiwanese would not face retribution or punishment and that Washington had been hyping anti-China propaganda. Beijing itself has debunked those arguments.

What is important about this new confidence and clarity is that Australians can hear Beijing’s real intentions.

It is with this greater knowledge that Australians can make an assessment that a war over Taiwan is now a real possibility.

Australians need to discuss what a war with China would look like. What would be Australia’s contribution to such a war effort in terms of troop numbers and resources?

And, crucially, how many deaths would the Australian public be prepared to accept as a cost of going to war with China?

At least as many as they are prepared to accept in the war with Russia after their invasion of Ukraine.

Not really.
Russia were our Allies in WWII.

The West can destroy China within a few months by imposing sanctions and blockading their ports.

They are not self-sufficient in energy or food, or raw materials for industry. Cut that off and they will struggle to eat and heat their homes.

While they have a big economy they have a fairly low GDP per capita with a very skewed wealth inequality, so their domestic consumption is not high enough to consume all of the “stuff” they produce. Their economy is still very highly export focused. So sanctions which include import bans on Chinese goods will damage their economy from the other direction.

So import and export bans on China will collapse their economy, put millions out of work, cause mass starvation and mass energy shortages.
