Mr V,

A student of mine tells me they have found a “Title to a mine” in his grandmother’s papers. That’s all I know so far. I have not seen the document.

It is believed to be a mine called “Stevens Mine” out Torrington way, just past Tenterfield.

A search reveals this:

https://www.mindat.org/loc-105570.html

It is the red “pick and shovel” in the middle.

Any ideas how I would go about finding further details? ie. who has the exploration license/mining rights/lease details etc?

Taa muchly in advance.

A search of the NSW Mines Department database would be a place to start. I forget how this is done now, but I’ll find out.

Aquamarine, nice.

Definitely. They used to have a superb database, but I haven’t looked at it in more than 40 years.

DIGS.

Cover page:

https://www.regional.nsw.gov.au/meg/geoscience/digs

GIS database. It takes a bit to learn to use it:

https://search.geoscience.nsw.gov.au/

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

With the limited information you have given me I wasn’t able to narrow down the search enough to get any reasonable information. There are two current mining leases west of Torrington.

The general area has many current (and past) Exploration Licences. Geologically (I have been in the area) it is the roof of a Palaeozoic, fluorine-rich granite. In essence, the hot, solid granite has stewed in it’s own juices, altering the granite and depositing new minerals. In the case of that granite, the new minerals contain tin, tungsten, bismuth, and include the gemstones beryl (emerald, aquamarine) and topaz.

Mining titles are not like freehold property titles. They are leases, not in perpetuity in NSW. Obligatory works have to be carried out, reports have to be submitted. There are various ways of delaying these things, but no way of stopping them forever.

Information from the document – lease number, date of issue etc, (or even a copy of the document) would assist greatly.
