I’ve been thinking about fonts.
Specifically how the most recent, modern fonts still contain antique letter forms.

Before reading this thread further:
Write out the alphabet, small and capital letters, in your normal hand.

You’d be pretty unlikely to seriph hand writing, wouldn’t you? I use the German cross through my z, 7, and I use the upswept thingy on my hand written 1. Which can be a bit confusing with a 7.

In some technical situations you avoid 1s and zeroes to avoid the confusion

I’ll put stops on S to stop it being confused for a 5

Then answer the following questions.

Are we talking about “block writing” or cursive script?
If block writing then:

ɑ
g
G
k

Normally I would not distinguish them, they’d both be a straight vertical line, as it is clear from the context. If it is vital to distinguish them (for instance in a password) I’ll put a little hooky on the 1, and make the l a ℓ like the litre symbol.

Again, normally no distinction, but if I’m writing a serial number or password or something, I’ll put a diagonal stroke through the zero.

Third one for r.

Neither of those for s. I would not draw serifs.

Neither of those for w or x. I would not draw serifs.

I suppose closest to the first one for y.

Now to answer the question for cursive script…

My cursive a doesn’t really look like either of those.

My cursive g doesn’t really look like either of those.

My cursive G doesn’t really look like any of those.

1 versus ℓ

0 versus a cursive O, unless it’s for a password or something, in which case there is a diagonal through the zero.

My cursives look a fair bit like the second option for all the remaining five

A thing i learnt a long time ago was to put a small horizontal stroke above letters like l, z, and o , especially in circumstance where they might be mistaken for numerals like 1, 2, and 0.

If that’s a standard practice in your workplace, no-one ever get them mixed up. It’s a bit of a chore at first, but it quickly becomes an unconscious action.

Pretty much the same. I was taught the full cursive thing.

I print uppercase and the confusing lowercase ones.. it’s still mostly scribble. I print things if I really want to refer to them later.
