That sounds suspenseful, like tremulous violins.

What is that cup made out of?

It is pyrex.
Look underneath the cup. It usually says pyrex.

Arts:
it doesn’t say anything at the bottom, it may have washed off… I’m pretty sure it was the Kmart Anko brand

No handle on this cup, right?

I’m not even sure whether this is caused in the first instance by a vibration in an airgap or by some kind of resonance in the solid cup itself. Would be great to do some experiments.

Arts
there is a handle on the cup./.. it’s sitting on a thick wooden coaster… I took it off the coaster and the sound continued…
I have never heard (or paid attention) to the sound before…

Resonance in the glass?
Did you use a spoon near the cup? Did it tap the cup?

Arts:
nope nope

i shall expand. there could be a small irregularity in the base of the mug where it contacts a surface. this irregularity acts like a whistle, for want of a better word. moving the mug won’t alter this unless it was put on, say, a cloth surface that blocks this irregularity.

I think it does make a difference. I would expect that the sound of air escaping would depend on both surfaces.

I couldn’t get any sound, but my guess would be the heat of the drink is making the air contained in a hairline crack in the ceramic glaze expand, and forcing it to bubble out through some moisture.

I suppose you could test it by waiting for it to dry completely then submerging it into hot water and looking for a tiny stream of bubbles.

Did other people hear it as well

Yes, it came in at approximately 4000 Hz.

So I clipped out the clunks and breathing.

dazvoz.com/tea.wav

The sound appears to have a wobbly peak around 3250 Hz to with one significant harmonic at around 6500 Hz.

that sound you isolated was the exact sound I heard, but really much clearer.. I don’t know how to get a clearer recording since I do not have recording equipment, but I will try to not breathe and will lock the cat out of the room..

Might be an idea to play it backwards, see if there’s a message.

Do you think you can use your ears to work out where exactly the sound comes from? The base, the side, the lip… see if there is a small crack or a place with little bubbles.

It sounds like “general background hum” except that it gets louder near the cup.

yeah it’s definitely coming or being created by the cup… because I cannot hear the sound right now with no cup but all the same conditions .. I’ll give it my best shot. …

It’s a fine crack in the cup. I had one do that and then it broke, with hot tea in it.

Seems like it is a useful warning then.

Well, I hope so. I saw the intriguing title of the thread and ventured forth with my warning.
Just checking QEII posts and I’m bored with Netflix.

the QEII post is full of monarchist wailing and gnashing their teeth. Sad.

well, new cup of tea.. it had the sound of what I think is air from the teabag, so I squeezed the tea bag and the sound was still there, not as strong… but it is different from yesterdays sound.. however since both of my cups like this were washed, it’s conceivable that this is a different cup.. so I’ll make some tea later in the other cup and see what happens.

the experiment continues..

is it possible this is in my head? sure, I have always been pretty susceptible to noises coming out of electronic equipment that don’t seem to bother others… but I do not hear this particular sound when the tea cup is not full of tea, once the water has cooled or when the cup is not in the room…

next steps..

try the second cup..
different tea
just hot water – no tea

I will find it difficult to control the temp without more equipment.. but we’ll see what happens Ove rate course of some minor changes..

I mean … no? We’ve heard and analysed the sound and it loudens when the mic is close to the cup.
