For Pepe, I think this deserves its’ own topic…an Australian hero story that was a legend in its time…

Please note the feller had to hack his way through “lawyer vine” (also known as “wait a while” and just for that he deserves a medal)

The O’Reilly’s were dairy farmers long before there was a guest house, or even a road in. The carted the milk out, down the mountain, in cans on pack horses.

It’s still a family run business and as well as the resort they own a winery now.

the great historical hero in gawler is john mckinlay.
he explored much the same territory as many others – south australia to nt and qld – but, unlike the others, he and his men survived.
reading his journal is interesting because of the way cattle and sheep farms were spreading west just a short time after the explorers were first seeing the land.

I bought a copy of “Green Mountains” and another book by O’Reilly called “Cullenbenbong”. His early years were in the Kanimbla Valley in NSW and my grandmother grew up with him I believe (hence my reason for buying the books).

I’ve just started reading “The Spirit of O’Reilly’s” by Peter O’Reilly.
