The 6th October Bridge (Arabic: كوبري 6 أكتوبر, Kubri 6 uktubar) is an elevated highway in central Cairo, Egypt. The 20.5-kilometre (12.7 mi) bridge and causeway crosses the Nile twice from the west bank suburbs, east through Gezira Island to Downtown Cairo, and on to connect the city to the Cairo International Airport to the east.
Its name commemorates the date of ‘The Crossing’, which commenced the outbreak day of the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

I had a mate, a few years older than me, who knew that date very well.
He was in Israel, doing his military service, and posted to an observation bunker on the Suez Canal with a sergeant and three other blokes. He said he waved to the usual Egyptians across the canal in their own bunker and they waved back , and he sat down to read a book and wait for sundown so he could have something to eat.
Then there was an almighty roar, and he found himself buried in sand. Fortunately, he was able to move, and dug himself out, to find the sergeant doing the same (never saw the other three again).
He saw small boats filled with Egyptian soldiers furiously paddling their way across the canal towards them. He asked the sergeant what to do.
‘Run’, said the sergeant, ‘don’t stop, don’t look back’.
