Probably better to have a thread rather than clog up chat.

The West Indies are a bit shit. They might struggle to qualify for the main event.

It’s more than passing strange that the final of a world cup is decided by one game.
I mean slap and tickle cricket is about good luck more than good management at the best of times.

Yeah, it’s not like it’s a terribly serious matter. But it will keep me occupied for the next couple of weeks.

Then the soccer world cup in Qatar starts.

Yeah. Drawn in Group D with France, Denmark & Tunisia. Don’t really expect them to progress from the group stage.

I don’t want to say out loud that the FIFA world up is more enjoyable as a neutral when Australia is not in it, because that would be unpatriotic.

So far, somewhere between 35 and 6500 workers have died. 6500 since 2010 (when the games were awarded), but not all of them were working on official WC2022 projects. Official figures are in the low 30s.

Zimbabwe have stumbled a little. 4/58 after 6.5 overs, chasing a fairly modest 154.

Maybe WI bowling is their strong suite.

NZ made 3/200 off their 20. Aus all out 111 in 17.1 overs. Massive negative run rate from this match, might struggle to get back into the competition and progress to the next round.

They’re probably counting on the pre-game riots outside the stadium to kill off at least several thousand ticket holders.

OK yeah. Just had a quick search, seems the AFL grand final this year got 100,024 people in. A record crowd for the past 50 years when safety restrictions were brought in. They must have done some minor renovations recently to add a few more seats. I had the 99K figure stuck in my head for some reason.

Oh good. So the local TV repeater being on the blink didn’t matter after all.

I don’t know.

It has changed so much over time it is hard to tell what the true origin is. The basic set of rules (more or less still used today) was written down by the Marylebone Cricket Club. There were versions of cricket before that, but take your pick as to what date to nail down.

Yes. Wiki says, “Cricket was created during Saxon or Norman times by children living in the Weald, an area of dense woodlands and clearings in south-east England that lies across Kent and Sussex. The first definite written reference is from the end of the 16th century. “

The Lisarow Ourimbah cricket club says, “The origins of cricket are very vague, and many theories have been put forward suggesting its origins. Extensive studies and research have been conducted to trace its history and they have come out with different versions. However it is commonly accepted that the game originated from a very old leisure activity indulged by shepherds. The shepherds used crook and other farm equipments to hit a ball like deceive which used to be made up of wool or stone.

The first evidence of cricket being played was recorded in the year 1550, by the pupils of Royal Grammar School, Guildford in England. In the year 1611 it is reported that two young men from Sussex were punished for playing cricket instead of going to the church. The first match is recorded to have been played at Coxheath in Kent in the year 1646.”

They say it survived on gambling.

I have the big thick book on the 200 years of cricket in Australia, published by the ACB and sponsored by Ansett. The first few decades are riddled with betting scandals and match fixing. Including by touring England teams playing against regional sides in tour matches. It seemed to be how the (unpaid) players made a few bucks on the side in between the serious games.

Some players were retained, kept by some lordly wealthy person so that they could gamble with their skill. Others were paid generous sums as professionals.

Yeah, the new ball is doing a bit on this pitch. NZ were in a spot of bother early on too, but managed to recover and -put on a decent score thanks to some very sloppy SL fielding, they could have had NZ 5-fer after about 8 overs.

As long as NZ hold their catches they should win this. Then they will be more or less through to the next round.

Yes. But they keep hitting catches to the fielders. NZ fielders are good enough to hold on to those chances. The SL fielders dropped plenty when they were bowling.

I still think Aus will win this, but it might not boost their overall run-rate by very much, not enough to finish in the top 2 in the group and go on to the semis. This might be tournament done for Australia.

It’s a win, but not very convincing to me.

The fast bowlers seemed pretty ineffective in the middle overs, they got smashed all over the park.

Strangely enough, NZ could still miss out: if they lose or have a N/R to Ireland, and Australia beat Afghanistan, and there is a result in the England v Sri Lanka match.

So amend that slightly too. If England beat Sri Lanka then New Zealand would miss out if they share the points with Ireland. If Sri Lanka beat England then NZ would have to lose to Ireland to miss out.

Even if Aus lose tonight I’ll still be barracking for Sri Lanka to make the semis ahead of Engerland. Just doesn’t feel right barracking for the poms, ever.

SL make 8/141 off their 20.

Very poor last 5 overs. got no acceleration at all. Or you could grudgingly say good bowling from England.

Anyway, should be a very gettable target. Barring some sort of extraordinary career-best performance from one of the SL bowlers.

Can’t be helped. Aus didn’t deserve it really. Of the other two top teams there was one massive thrashing and one match washed out. All the other matches were against the qualifiers and the minnows, and they couldn’t even get the NRR back into positive territory with 3 consecutive wins against them.

Can’t expect to make it through to the semi finals with a negative NRR.

Well there’s really no one to blame as games get shorter and shorter for instant gratification.
It can eventually be distilled down to one a side and decided at the coin toss.
There can be a big build up with a lot of ad breaks and a shed load of former tosses giving their opinions on form, thumb injuries and glean some insight as to their mental state from their social media posts.
And if there is some weather about it can be played in a covered stadium or a shed.
