It’s more than passing strange that the final of a world cup is decided by one game.
I mean slap and tickle cricket is about good luck more than good management at the best of times.

So far, somewhere between 35 and 6500 workers have died. 6500 since 2010 (when the games were awarded), but not all of them were working on official WC2022 projects. Official figures are in the low 30s.

I, of course, believe the official figures. FIFA would never have any truck with corruption.
Zimbabwe have stumbled a little. 4/58 after 6.5 overs, chasing a fairly modest 154.
Maybe WI bowling is their strong suite.

Namibia in reply are 5/49 after 9 overs.

Fair enough
Someone needs to tell the Aussie top order that it is still OK to hit the ball along the ground during the powerplay overs.
New Zealand 3/200 (20.0)
Australia 6/82 (12.3)
Pat Cummings wants this over quickly so they can turn those big lights off.

NZ made 3/200 off their 20. Aus all out 111 in 17.1 overs. Massive negative run rate from this match, might struggle to get back into the competition and progress to the next round.

OK yeah. Just had a quick search, seems the AFL grand final this year got 100,024 people in. A record crowd for the past 50 years when safety restrictions were brought in. They must have done some minor renovations recently to add a few more seats. I had the 99K figure stuck in my head for some reason.

I don’t know.
It has changed so much over time it is hard to tell what the true origin is. The basic set of rules (more or less still used today) was written down by the Marylebone Cricket Club. There were versions of cricket before that, but take your pick as to what date to nail down.

Yes. Wiki says, “Cricket was created during Saxon or Norman times by children living in the Weald, an area of dense woodlands and clearings in south-east England that lies across Kent and Sussex. The first definite written reference is from the end of the 16th century. “
The Lisarow Ourimbah cricket club says, “The origins of cricket are very vague, and many theories have been put forward suggesting its origins. Extensive studies and research have been conducted to trace its history and they have come out with different versions. However it is commonly accepted that the game originated from a very old leisure activity indulged by shepherds. The shepherds used crook and other farm equipments to hit a ball like deceive which used to be made up of wool or stone.
The first evidence of cricket being played was recorded in the year 1550, by the pupils of Royal Grammar School, Guildford in England. In the year 1611 it is reported that two young men from Sussex were punished for playing cricket instead of going to the church. The first match is recorded to have been played at Coxheath in Kent in the year 1646.”
They say it survived on gambling.

I have the big thick book on the 200 years of cricket in Australia, published by the ACB and sponsored by Ansett. The first few decades are riddled with betting scandals and match fixing. Including by touring England teams playing against regional sides in tour matches. It seemed to be how the (unpaid) players made a few bucks on the side in between the serious games.

Some players were retained, kept by some lordly wealthy person so that they could gamble with their skill. Others were paid generous sums as professionals.

Yeah, the new ball is doing a bit on this pitch. NZ were in a spot of bother early on too, but managed to recover and -put on a decent score thanks to some very sloppy SL fielding, they could have had NZ 5-fer after about 8 overs.
As long as NZ hold their catches they should win this. Then they will be more or less through to the next round.

Even if Aus lose tonight I’ll still be barracking for Sri Lanka to make the semis ahead of Engerland. Just doesn’t feel right barracking for the poms, ever.
I think a spectator has been injured by a ball hit for six into the crowd.
I am surprised it doesn’t happen more often.
This is going well.
Big over. 3 wickets. Turns the game.
.. and another one gone. Just when I was about to say Afghanistan might have a chance here, there is a clatter of wickets and it’s all over bar the shouting.
never in doubt :p
Aus win by 4 runs. Probably still going to have an overall negative NRR.
It’s up to you now, Sri Lanka. You’re our only hope.
Australia wins by 4 runs.
Go Sri Lanka :)
Yep. NRR is still negative. -0.17
Hard to imagine you can qualify for the semis with a negative NRR.

Don’t take your eyes off the ball.
Sri Lanka are certainly not doing Australia any favours.

They make 141 after the 20 overs. That’s quite shit.
SL make 8/141 off their 20.
Very poor last 5 overs. got no acceleration at all. Or you could grudgingly say good bowling from England.
Anyway, should be a very gettable target. Barring some sort of extraordinary career-best performance from one of the SL bowlers.

C’mon boys – who wants to make a name for himself?
Could there be a weird finish?
sibeen said:

probably not. SL have to bring on a crap bowler soon.
England are going to leave it to the last over…
Ooooo.
Wow.
England to to less than a run a ball with 6 overs to go, then they went totally timid and tried to do it all in singles. Then they panicked and tried to hit 6s.
BUGGER

Can’t be helped. Aus didn’t deserve it really. Of the other two top teams there was one massive thrashing and one match washed out. All the other matches were against the qualifiers and the minnows, and they couldn’t even get the NRR back into positive territory with 3 consecutive wins against them.
Can’t expect to make it through to the semi finals with a negative NRR.

If it was real cricket I’d be saying FUCK rather than the rather muted bugger.

It is just a warm-up thread for the FIFA Corruption Cup 2022 in Qatar starting later this month.
Sarth Efrika are struggling slightly against Netherlands. Chasing 159 to win they are 3/64 in the 10th over. No sure thing to in it.
4-90 from 12.3
5/112 from 15.2
great outfield catch
6-fer
7 fer
Need another 39 with 15 balls left.
Netherlands WIN!
This is going to throw some chaos into the table.

LOL
Pakistan win by 5 wickets. That should get them into the semis ahead of South Africa.
Saffers got nobody to blame but themselves for losing to Netherlands earlier today.

Well there’s really no one to blame as games get shorter and shorter for instant gratification.
It can eventually be distilled down to one a side and decided at the coin toss.
There can be a big build up with a lot of ad breaks and a shed load of former tosses giving their opinions on form, thumb injuries and glean some insight as to their mental state from their social media posts.
And if there is some weather about it can be played in a covered stadium or a shed.

I’m just glad that even in this modern age with our new formats the Jaapies are still chokers…
Surprise to me – Pakistan have won their semi and knocked NZ out of the tournament. I thought NZ werre a sure thing.
Anyway, India vs England tomorrow night.
Could we see a Pak v Ind final?
India need to get a wriggle on. 2/62 after 10 overs.
Wickets in hand, but not many runs on the board.

3 down for 75.

If you go by the “double the score after 12 overs” theory, they are heading for around 154.
That run rate’s gettin’ up a bit, hey what but.

Yeah, Softcock is doing rather well. They might get over 160 at this rate.

ROFL – it took me a minute :)
Total of 168.
Nice little flurry at the end.
England set a target of 169. Will take some getting.

Jayzus, what the fuck was that.
this match should have been played on a brand new pitch …
without loss (so far) hey what but.

Eng 0/156 off 14.
Still they are one of the few teams in the world who can lose it from there.
Well, that was a shellacking.
Well, that’s it. Fucking flogged ‘em.
I suspect Pakistan have used up all their emotional tickets in winning the final last night and won’t be ready for the final.
So, we might as well hand England the cup now.
Strangely enough, the number 2 sides in each side of the draw won their semi and progessed through to the final.

So far today I’ve had 8mm. If you add that to 44mm over the past 48 hours before 9AM.

Of which, 32mm fell between 4:30 and 5:30 AM yesterday. I heard the thunder but slept through that rain.
There are these sudden drop storms wandering about.

8/137 from 20.
So England & Wales need 138. Probably just cruise to victory with only one or two wickets down.
