Giant, megawatt-scale wave energy generator to be tested in Scotland

Irish company OceanEnergy has already tested its oscillating water column generators at significant scale in Hawaii, and it’s just signed on to a four-year project to test, validate and commercialize its biggest unit yet off Orkney, in Scotland. The OE35, billed as the world’s largest capacity floating wave energy device, is certainly an imposing thing to look at. While no dimensions have yet been drawn up for the machine to be built for Scotland as yet, the machine the company built for testing at a US Navy test site in Hawaii measures 125 × 59 ft (38.1 × 18 m), with a draft of 31 ft (9.4 m) and a total weight of 826 tons.

This massive OE35 wave energy generator was built in an Oregon shipyard and towed out to Hawaii for testing

Giggles. A 1.5 MW diesel generator can be hired from your generator hire mob in a standard 40 foot container.

Because I’m an engineer. Just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should be. This is, in my opinion, a stupid idea. But hey, someone is going to get rich on the grants.

Good point. And diesel doesn’t ruin the appearance of coastline – usually.

We can go for diversity, though. I’m a big believer in diversity.

And diesel prices can increase, whereas the price of waves has stayed the same so far.
