If we want to keep this little community going (and sadly, at this stage I’m not sure that’s a worthwhile idea), I’m thinking it’s time to get our own premises, not dependent on the charity of a mystery figure who refuses to keep out the trolls.

What would be involved, technically and financially, in setting up our own new Holiday Forum with an effective modicum of moderation in place?

I’m not sure, but i doubt that it’s as hard as it was in ‘the olden times’.

I’ll have a talk with Spalding Jr. He’s a software developer, with a good deal of experience with user interfaces. I don’t expect that he’d do it for us, but he may have some advice. Even if nothing comes of it, it’ll be educational for me.

This place is essentially a life boat… at times it kind of remined me of the atoll that the Marnier visits at the start of Waterworld.

There will be a time when this forum ceases to exist and knowing that many people here rely on this community for a major part of their social interaction I do hope that people make the necessary steps to ensure that they have some other form of social connection with their online acquaintances.

I have FB. But really my online friends here are not a big part of my life and if this site disappears it won’t worry me. Sure I enjoy the interaction. I have lived in Melb, Darwin, and Perth and made friends in all those places. I haven’t kept in contact with any of them.

OK, my very final post in this forum. I can’t allow the bullshit that Arts has posted to go unchallenged.

What’s happening in Ukraine is not “a matter of opinion”. The Russians really have invaded a peaceful democratic country, really are engaging in a program of genocide, really are torturing, raping and murdering women and children and dumping their bodies in mass graves.

Wookie denies all this and claims that his dictator, Putin, is just “rounding up Nazis” or whatever fantasy goes on in wookie’s sick head.

Tamb, for one, find all this “amusing”. Atrocities are funny when there’s an amusing troll in here blaming the victims.

Public spaces always operate somewhere between the two extremes of all speech being allowed and no dissident speech being allowed. Neither of those extremes is a workable viable option so the discussion is always about exactly where the line is.

For instance if there was someone making a hundred posts a day and multiple threads excusing child rape, murder and torture I think most of us would agree that is over the line.

Yet, this is basically what wookie is doing. As Russia retreats they leave behind an army of rape victims many of them underage, mass graves full of mutilees and torture victims and wookie is giving it all a very excited thumbs up.

Agreeing that some kinds of activity ought not be permitted is not tantamount to seeking a forum in which there are no voices in discord. All public spaces have a line.

I think the third point is somewhat is the issue here though, some people don’t have a lot (outside of their relationships here) to go home to and so they hold all this very close to their hearts (which is totally understandable, but it also means that it will be missed significantly when it’s gone).

The only thing that I would like to change is to have a list of handles on the right hand side that are actively reading/participating.

You have to log in temporarily to read/reply to threads.

If they haven’t clicked on a comment in 15 minutes, tag them as AFK.

If they haven’t clicked on anything in an hour, log them out.

I pop in and out during the day when I have the chance, and I have no idea who is reading the posts. Sometimes it seems that there is no-one here, but there is likely a lot of lurkers waiting for something interesting to reply to.

Otherwise I like the basic HTML. If you can’t get your point across using basic text, then you probably don’t have a point.

i must admit that I am quite good at never talking to a person again if I feel they have harmed me. But I don’t extend their to everyone involved. I’m still talking to Brett’s mum and the girls. The relationships are shattered but that was not my fault.

I’m not sure how much harm has come to car or why he can’t avoid those who he deems unworthy. But i don’t know why everyone else gets punished too.

I posted here and there for a while. But I think the format makes a huge difference to the forum experience. Having lots f categories with threads neatly organised by topic destroys the spontaneity you get here with them all mixed up in View By Time. It works for big forums with lots of posters, but not in small forums… IME.

I;‘ve said it before and I’ll say it again… this has more of a pub chat feel, you come in, listen/read some of the conversations then leave and what chat gets missed in the mean time gets missed… that’s the real feel to it.. also you read things you wouldn’t click into in a topic heading… like I would never click into a astronomy topic heading to read the astronomy threads, but I read them here because they are right there and sometimes take me by surprise… so it’s I dunno… easy to be a part of…

also it appeals to our laziness of just clicking a post and getting the goods instead of clicking into a thing and then into another thing.. etc

The ‘stream of consciousness’ style of chat here would suit a discord server… the issue with a discord however is that you kind of lose the specific threaded format.

very easy however to various channels that cover different topics and people could post questions or articles in there..

the other really good thing about a discord is that it uses an existing and well supported infrastructure base, but it’s not free.

I;‘ve said it before and I’ll say it again… this has more of a pub chat feel, you come in, listen/read some of the conversations then leave and what chat gets missed in the mean time gets missed… that’s the real feel to it.. also you read things you wouldn’t click into in a topic heading… like I would never click into a astronomy topic heading to read the astronomy threads, but I read them here because they are right there and sometimes take me by surprise… so it’s I dunno… easy to be a part of…

also it appeals to our laziness of just clicking a post and getting the goods instead of clicking into a thing and then into another thing.. etc

Having lots f categories with threads neatly organised by topic destroys the spontaneity you get here with them all mixed up in View By Time. It works for big forums with lots of posters, but not in small forums… IME.

I don’t know why but this conversation is really funny. That’s what I like about this place, the occasional absurdity…

One thing though, we had several forums to choose from when the original ABC SSSF was going bye bye.

Squeezebabe had a suggested one , then there was the one that had the gardening forum as well. They went to the wayside and this one remained as the people’s choice … I thought

Doesn’t do it for me , for what ever reason. although I use FB to stay connected with family , i did join that fb group tho

well.. not all of the sssfer’s from the past post here either but with a location to find , the science community has somewhere to meet on the net for all levels of interest that is probably important
